CIS Test Equipment??

I want to learn how to diagnose and adjust the CIS system on my 1976 2.7. What diagnostic tools will I need and where is a good place to buy them?

Thanks
Matt

Fuel pressure tester, digital volt meter, air compressor for vacuum leak testing and a test light should cover it.

+1 on the fuel gauges. You'll need a fused switch to jump the fuel pump relay so you can do the CCP test.

You also need a good multimeter. If you can find one that can measure duty cycle that is nice to have. Or if you can measure dwell and convert it to duty cycle. My timing light has a dwell function built in.

You will need a way to check for vac leaks. Various approaches for this... spray a little carb cleaner, soapy water, etc. Do a search and you will find plenty on this.

Most people don't have an exhaust gas analyzer so you might have to take it to a shop that has one for that. I've read you can use the O2 sensor as a proxy (.7V) but I don't think your year model has one. Not sure how accurate that statement is anyway.

Matt,
I recommend you read up on the CIS system so you know what components you have that need testing. You definitely need a fuel pressure tester. Pelican sells a nice one. You have several components which are electrically activated: cold start valve, thermo-time sensor, auxiliary air valve, WUR, fuel pump safety switch on the air intake. These need a volt/ohm meter for testing. Our cars do not have a frequency valve like the later SC has so we don't need a dwell meter for that. No oxygen sensor either. For the injectors, a way to compare volume at the injectors, a graduated cylinder is useful. I can't think of anything else right now. Our injection systems are simpler than the later models. What we gain in simplicity, we lose in gas mileage, but not much. I am getting less than 20 mpg in town but around 24 mpg on the highway. What is nice about our CIS is that it is pretty much mechanical without a lot of electronics and therefore simpler to understand.

Add a CO meter to set mixture. I have a Gunson GasTester, works great! About $200 on ebay for a new one, I have seen used ones go for no less than $160 on ebay, so I bought a new one instead since it's only a few bucks more than the going rate for a used one.
