1st tune up .. Lotsa work, some suggestions and a few questions

Well I am doing my first tune up on the car. 97k on the odometer and as far as I can tell from the receipts I've been given, the PO didn't do any basic maintenance beyond oil changes. On tap today was:

- new plugs (NGK BPR6ES) gapped to .28
- new plug wires (Bosche 09262)
- new voltage regulator

Tomorrow, new altenator bolts, reassembly. Then install new shifter bushings, new Griffith fan control, clean evaporator in smugglers box, wash, wax and ride.

So, lessons learned? Plan a full day! Other then that I do have a few suggestion for folks getting into an 88' 911 to do this stuff.

- one jack plate bolt on the AC compressor is impossible to get to (back right side) suggestion is just undo the compressor, slide it to the side and the remove the jack plate bolts. Save some knuckle skin.
- when removing fan assembly the plastic air director has to be removed before you can pull it out, this is not clear in the writeup I was using.
- it is more then a gentle "tap" to get the altenator loose from the fan assembly housing. I removed the voltage regulator and with a wood block in its spot i gave it a heavy hit to get it loose. Needed something to prop it up with so I use an old wooden box and braced it on top of one corner. I wish I had a large vise instead.
- plug wires aren't easy to replace, but one trick is to lay the old ones out on a table and assemble the new ones with the old ones as a reference.
- the rotor cap is a PITA to install! Use a long handle flat head screw driver to get enough leverage to push the spring clips and turn to lock on the tabs.
- the rotor head is numbers and there is a sticker on the right side of the engine compartment that shows cylinder #'s and rotor cap cylinder #'s
- altenator bolts are jacked up, gotta replace these

Now some question;
- how do these 25 year old plugs look to you?

Altenator, is this a problem? This is the original 25 year old altenator

Lastly, what is this for? On throttle body assembly, open plug grey in color, three prongs?

plugs look great for there age, taping the fan housing on a wooden block and letting the fan fall free onto some rags is a easer way to remove the alt. from the fan. Don't loose the woodreff key. Having the alt. rebuilt will fix that scoring o the stater. that plug is a test port, nothing goes in there. that bolt is a mofo for everyone
