But Wayne, do you know the miles on that engine, and what the compression/leakdown numbers were (if it was tested)? It seems like that engine would have some symptoms.

Broken Head Studs
I'm shocked at you guys!
That engine that Wayne posted was actually from the original 934 Targa, which developed over 500 HP from 3.0 naturally aspirated litres . That's one carb per cylinder to you and me! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/75642-700-000-934-wha-who.html |
are any of you guys wishing you took me up on that bet?

James, I bought my SC with a ripple in the stock market a couple years ago. Read....Free SC. Well, with the market like it is right now. My portfolio is down about a boxster and a half. :(
|
Ouch, too bad, I guess someone else will get nostatic's new car - unless he hides it from his wife.
Nostatic - can you park it down the street and drive your current car down to it and switch cars each day? She'll never find out! |
I can't stop shopping HELP.
Christ I can't believe how anxious I am to hear the results of the PPI. It's like I'm buying the car!
Its been about 3 months since I bought my car and I still find myself scouring the net for used Porsches...and I'm not in the market for another one. Anyone else experience the same? David |
"NEWS FLASH" Nostatic seen in New York City looking for old lady giving away 2 porsches! All kidding aside, I'm crossing my fingers hoping this is the one!
|
He's not logged in again. Maybe he's out talking to his wrench. Or swinging by the bank.:D I hope we're not jinksing him!

On medium to large-ish purchases, it is very common for a consumer to actually research and shop MORE *after* they made the purchase, than they did *before* they made the purchase. Strange, but true. |
Yes, talking to my wrench. Got all the current info. Haven't pulled the valve covers, mostly because there are some other issues and I want to discuss price adjustment possibilities before I go further. It is top dollar for a low miles car, so I'm working under the assumption that everything should be pretty perfect. Anyway, here's what he found:
Oil leaks from the cam seals, front pulley, pressure relief valve and trans leak. Quoted $1200 to fix all the leaks, add $400 to upgrade the chain tensioners (but I knew they were original). Hot starting issue, probably fuel pump valve or accumulator needs 15K service, belts, air box straps, fuse box service, pop off valve (knew this wasn't in) $680 brake lines and one steel line $217 Shocks all around $800 other issues I knew about with AC, hood shocks, sound pad. Didn't get quotes on that because I knew it going in. No deal breakers, but it tells me that it should be a bit below top dollar imho. Let me know if I'm off-base... |
Sounds like good price negotiation material to me, some of those leaks might be fixable for a lot cheaper DIY. How bad are the leaks? Just seeping/weeping or dripping? If this was a very thourough PPI, and it sounds like it, lack of cylinder to head leaks bodes well for headstuds. Good luck!
|
All those oil leaks, in need of new shock and it has less than 15K miles?
Personally, I would rather pick up a car that had been driven and well maintained than sitting. |
not 15K miles, but rather under 45K miles. With an asking price in the high teens my feeling is it should be pretty much perfect.
|
you never mentioned the year, did you?
|
Must be pre-Carrera if there's a pop-off consideration. High teens for pre-Carrera sounds high with the described problems.
|
So high teens kinda eliminates this car 911SC I have not seen it in person but I like the flamboyant color.
Unless destined to be a garage queen or museum piece I would look for a car with more miles and the SC required upgrades in place. The extra money in your pocket can be spent where you deem most important and you won't stress over every click of the odometer. Keep us posted.... |
What does the barber say? NEXT!

Very astute Denis..
Of ALL the objections, yours seem to be the most realistic. Anybody here, driven a SC 50,000-100,000 miles? I'm sure, not many. Anybody here driven ANY Porsche ( of the same generation) 100,000 miles. For that sake anybody here driven the sum of ALL porsches 100,000 miles??
The question IS ..? Is there any crediblity in what a technician says that has NEVER owned a Porsche?? You say....well, they should know?? ..Really ?? So, mechanics should know?? Do mechanics "take-off" and replace parts ?? Would you let your mechanic drive your car @ Willow Springs ( knowing he never owned a Porsche).. Think about it ??? |
I don't know what's happening with the PPI, or what state of mind nostatic is in right now but, I do know this...
There is no perfect car. Especially when that car is 10-34 years old. Isn't the purpose of a PPI to determine that you are not getting ripped off, and to see what you will need to do to bring the car up to some mythical, near unobtainable standard? I would venture to say that over 50% of the cars represented on this board have at least a small oil leak, and 80% could benefit from some new shocks (I'm not saying they NEED them, just that they could BENEFIT from them). In the long run the purchase has to be treated like a marriage, you have to see the car (including warts, leaks and the things that displease you) and not care, because it's your baby, your pride and joy, your love. If you don't feel this way about the car, then move on. Just remember though, there are no perfect cars, there are only cars that are perfect FOR YOU. |
