As it happens, Old_Skul is in L.A., and the two of us are meeting for a beer this evening. (Wow, security alert: both Pelican forum moderators in the same room at the same time! This is Afghanistan's chance to get back at us for the bomb Leland wrote on!) We'll keep our eyes peeled for a bass player in an SC with a big, 'I-finally-pulled-the-trigger,' grin on his face. |
C'mon...nostatic could ACTUALLY be buying a car? If so, I gotta say this. He probably knows as much, if not more, about the plusses and minuses of every year and model of the 911 as any of us non mechanics. VERY interesting to hear of his selection, $$$ vs. hoped for benefits...

I still have not heard back from my wrench. I've called twice and am still awaiting his return call. Sounds like he was pretty swamped today...the PPI evidently is done as he has "a list" for me. I'm just waiting to talk with him to find out the specifics. I also am not sure that this is the end of the PPI, as I wanted valve covers removed but he advised to wait until he did his preliminary check of the car (ie no sense throwing good money after bad). When I hear something I'll let ya know. I don't really like to wait...but the saga continues. |
Nostatic? This guy sounds like a wrench you (maybe) should trust. No need to remove valve covers until he's checked out other things? I LIKE that...hope you do as well... Give the guy time...and a bottle of his favorite legal vice when he's done...just my unsolicited advice...

Nostatic, Mate, what's going on? I've actually been working for the last few days (they flew me out to Australia) which is quite out of character for me, so I'm not up to date on what's happening. Have you found a car you like?????

I got a "3rd party" report from the current owner. Compression and leakdown are good. Valve covers weren't pulled but I don't know if my wrench felt it wasn't necessary. There are a few other items, but I'll have to talk with him to get all the details. I should be able to get him tomorrow morning. There is always some opinion involved in determining what is "wrong" with the car, and what is "future maintenance". For instance, do the shocks need to be replaced now or in a year? He at least thinks it is a good car otherwise he wouldn't have done the compression and leakdown.
Anyway, I hate to speculate too much without hearing the first hand report. More on this as it develops... :) |

Stuart, I tried to sign up to get the dole for the day, but it suddenly occured to me "Hey, what's going on I'm working here". I go to Parrammatta every couple of months for a few days so if any of you guys are out west maybe we could do a drink or two along at one of the fabulous cafes on Church St. Bill '79SC

EVERY PPI FOR 1978-89 911s SHOULD ENTAIL AND INCLUDE REMOVING THE VALVE COVERS. It only takes 5 minutes (only need to remove the lower ones). I do not trust anyone who says "it's not necessary." The only way it would not be necessary is if the rest of the car is a pile of junk, and you're not going to buy it anyway. Wayne..I agree, yet disagree? If the car was a POS before pulling valve covers, why bother to look? If, for example, you lifted the front trunk carpet and saw evidence of heavy front end collision damage, why look for more? Or...(take your pick here, many other places to LOOK)...
My post was of that theme. There can be a lot of reasons to pass on a car, without ever turning a wrench or hooking up any test equipment. Pulling valve covers would be down on my checklist for a PPI...So, a question? Is there a checklist for a PPI? If not, should we try to suggest items for one??? |

..on that motor what was the compression test, and the leak down #'s...You sound like Mike Wallace from 60 minutes. Tell the whole story...pal.
