Ignition switch Electrical Problem
Hello All,
I am working on a 1984 3.2 Carrara Row M491 So I installed a new turn signal switch. In the process I fried the red wire going from the ignition switch to the head light switch (no big deal) I made the repair and in the process removed the back of the plug that goes into the ignition switch. I have followed the instructions as best I can and now I have a very odd issue. When I turn the key to the on (Acc.) position the engine begins to crank, if I turn the key to the start position the engine starts but the starter keeps cranking. I've definitely got something in the wrong place. I have been following the diagram below, I have tried switching the two red wires a the top (30), I have also tried moving the Red\Black between the two (15) slots. Could someone walk me through which key wires I need to have in place to just get the car to start and run. I have the Bentley manual, but electronics are not my strength. Thanks in advance for your assistances. ![]() |

Don't have my Bentley in front of me, but it's the yellow wire to the starter that is in the wrong spot (should only have power in the start position).

I agree^^. You have two yellow wires on the ignition switch, one at 50 and the other at R in your photo. One terminal, 50, goes to the starter so you likely have the two yellow wires in the wrong place. Try swapping locations and see if that solves the problem.

Yellow wire should be at 30, wire you have at 30 should be where yellow wire is now..flip them around and that should do it.

" (Acc.) position the engine begins to crank, if I turn the key to the start position the engine starts but the starter keeps cranking " Did you mean Run position instead of start?
From the diagram it seems the Yellows may be off. I would disconnect the yellow wire from the starter while checking, to avoid damaging the starter and gear teeth. The radio should be hooked up to R. The starter, DME, etc. should be on 50. Verify with a meter where each wire goes. ![]() ![]()

Success!
Ok, first of all Thanks to all that replied! You guys are awesome! It was the Yellow wires, once I read your reply's and thought about what was happening it all made perfect since. It now starts and runs as it should. Time to put it all back together and give it a bath. Thank you all again, have a great weekend (I will now).
