CDI location...

'88 Carrera, where is the CDI located. And I see no "trigger" wiring from the distributor...Crank position sensor...?

Started then died within 2-3 seconds, now cranks but no start. Fuel pump runs with jumper bypass to fuse, no spark from coil.

Tach does not "jitter" while cranking.

There is no CDI on an 88 Carrera, the coil is switched by an IGBT on the Motronic board itself.

DME box is located under the driver's seat. Right next to it is a small, black cube, which is the DME relay. It also controls the fuel pump. I suspect the DME relay has gone bad in your car.

Strange..

Fuel pump was getting power during cranking but no sparks..

Disconnected battery ground, count to 10 slowly, reconnect, crank...START...!!

What...??

Check the voltage at the alternator with a DVM.

Happened to this car about 15 years ago, battery began to boil, drove home with all electrical loads ON.

New battery and alternator back then, Squire's.

I have a Fluke DMM and an O'scope.

Strange..New DME relay but still no start. Biopsy on old relay (non-OEM) indicated it was in good condition.

Wiggled a few of the fuses in the front, can started right up.

Symptoms: sometimes no start, sometimes start but stops with accelerator depression, sometimes start, run in place for a minute or so, drive away.....

A Spal fan, triggered by an over/under voltage switch, aimed at the fuse panel = problem solved.
