1986 911 carrera ECU
I think I finally diagnosed my engine miss. When it's over 85 degree out and the car is run for over 20 minutes the ecu heats up enough to have a failure that causes the engine to buck when driving at a constant speed. Swapped out the ecu for another one and the problem went away. put the old one back and drive long enough to heat up the ecu and problem comes back. I can't buy that unit. and I don't want to pay $2677 for a new one. Does anybody have one they want to sell. part numbers 0261 200 050 or 911 618 111-05.
thanks |

Place a WTB in the classifieds. They come up for sale every now and then.
This issue has been discussed on here before. What happend is the old solder cracks and when it gets hot, separates enough for cause problems. Some owners have had success in taking the box apart and reflowing the solder.

Repairk
Can't you just get it repaired ? I think I see ads in Panorama for places that do repairs. Do a quick search here in the forum. Maybe even our friend Mr s. wong at 911chips might be of help.

Have you considered getting yours repaired? Could be as simple as a bad solder or something. I haven't been on Pelican much lately, but if Loren is still around, I know he does ECU repairs....just don't ask him about chips

Send it to Steve Wong, Loren or there's a place in FL that does repairs/exchanges as well. Most guarantee their work for 3-5 years as I recall.

I recently had mine repaired by Ingo Schmitz from this board (username ischmitz). He turned it around quickly, and the price was very reasonable.

Do you have a soldering iron?
Open it up and inspect the solder joints where the stand up transistors go thru the printed circuit board for very small cracks... they are hard to see, but if you see some with 'rings', reflow the solder with an iron. Very common problem. You can search for cracked solder joints on this forum, or use any of the ECU repair people mentioned above, all seem reputable. Hope this helps, Chuck.H '89 TurboLookTarga, 359k miles |

I recently read (here?) that it's really easy to identify cold soldier joints if you shoot a foto of the board with a digital camera and then zoom in on each joint on a computer monitor.

911 ecu
Thanks to all for your replies to my posts. I'm shopping someone to repair the ECU. Can you tell me how to get in touch with Loren, or Ingo Schmitz? I found 911chips on line and talked to Specialized ECU Repair.
I've owned the car since 1997 and just put a clutch, flywheel and service. Its been a great car but it's time for something different. Boxster might be the next Porsche I own. Thanks again Iverman. ![]() |

A quick search shows it's been almost one year since Loren has posted here...hope he is doing well. I've had many debates with Loren over the past decade over chips

Iverman, Listen to what Chuck H said. Mine was having the same problem. I spent $6 to $8 on a 25 watt adio shack soldering iron and re-flowed the solder joint on the ignition transistor and all was good. Less than a two hour job and most of that was removing and installing the drivers seat. It's easy to see the bad solder joint.

Thanks Blade
I sent it to Ingo. I wanted to have it fixed professionally, I've tried to repair solder joints on other electronics with limited (read that SNAFU) results. I'm selling the car and think the warranty will help with the sale and I'd feel pretty bad if I sold the car with my fix and it crashed. It took me 10 minutes to remove the ECU from under the seat. |
