Okay, I'm feeling more than a little stupid. Sherwood, you figured it out. The bushing adaptor attaches to the top of tunnel. I was attaching it to the bottom which was throwing the rod alignment way out of whack. I reinstalled it properly and it is shifting through all gears properly. My apologies to all for the wild goose chase but I certainly do appreciate everyone's assistance.

No problem. For many, that location is selected about 50% of the time w/head scratching - part of the learning curve of doing it the first time. Glad you were able to keep the checkbook intact.
