911 clutch rating
Does anyone know how much power and torque a Sachs 915 power clutch is rated for? I have it in my modified 911 rated at 275 hp and am experiencing clutch overheating and gear grinding on downshifts.
Any help and suggestion to solve my problem would be appreciated. Thanks |

Not sure about the rating, I was told to stick to oem spec clutch.
How do you know it is over heating? Are you smelling a burnt asparagus oder? Grinding into gear could mean the cable may not be adjusted to spec not allowing the clutch to engage from the fly wheel, where on the pedal throw does your clutch catch or release? If not in the middle, it needs adjustment or it could be your shift coupler that needs adjustment, maybe both. Jim

The Sachs 915 "Power Clutch" is a cherry-picked stock unit rated in the top 10% of spec. Gets marginal over 300 ft/lbs at the flywheel in my view, but probably OK up to that point. A stock 915 clutch might also be in the top 10% of the batch - or could be somewhere in the other 90%.... There are several Sach pressure plate options, most of them alu instead of iron. The "Sport" clutch is the highest rated available I believe. Mine held 350 ft/lbs @ the rollers with a spring-centered 6-puck clutch - but increased pedal pressure (and breakage of cables, brackets etc) quite dramatically - and although I streeted it on a DD for a few years, it's pretty anti-social - a puck is very grabby and doesn't want ot be slipped. Did I mention pedal pressure? It's like leg presses after 10 minutes in stop/go traffic.... I wouldn't go higher rated than you need for a street car. And avoid a puck unless you really need it (pretty sure the stock 915 friction plate will handle more than the stock basket).

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the response. The car makes around 275 hp and 225 torque and is used for the street only. The clutch catches around 1/2- 2/3 up. The car is fine when I first start driving it hard. After a while of pushing the car it will lose the clutch without any smell and freewheel. I will then just sit for a while and the clutch would start to work again. I was told the clutch was overheating and should get the RSR puck clutch. I am also having problems downshifting into 3rd or 4th especially when the revs are high. Please let me know your thoughts. I don't want to buy a new clutch if its not needed or tear up a recently rebuilt trans. I also don't like the driveability of the RSR clutch. |

Well, get under her and check the settings, a friend to press the pedal while you take the readings
