Window question
85 Targa and the passenger side window would not go down even though the motor was running. Checked and the window moves up and down by hand. Took off interior panel and all appears to work properly but how would the glass be held in the cradle that raises and lowers the glass? Should ther be adhesive? Gasket sealant, 2-way tape?

Bill, the glass is seated into the channel with a black window beding strip. It is folded over the edge of the window and the channel is pressed onto the glass. If you take the glass out of the door and the channel off of the regulator you can take them to a good glass shop and they will seat it for you. It's really pretty easy to do but the first time can make you a little nervous. Be sure to mark which way the channel fits the glass and mark the spacing on the glass. You can usually tell by the dirt on the lower edge.

In my 87 the windows are pressed into a bottom frame using a gasket or seal. Since I never stripped it down further, This is about all I know.
over the years, any lubricant gets hardened and impedes the movement. I broke mine down and cleaned all of the grooves and then lubed with a dry lube (moly-b) on the sides. The regulator has some wheels that get into the track underneath the window - I cleaned and lubed that with some grease. In this pic, you can see the white plastic guide is blackened with the old gunk. ![]() Also, sometimes the peened/swaged pin holding some pre-tension on the spring will break off - see if yours is still there.

Thanks cpa looks like the same problem I was describing with Steely you seem to have interpreted that the channel on the rail is the problem. It was the glass being held in the channel that is the problem here. Will see what I can come up with in crimping by a dealer or getting the "tape" they seem to use.

While you are in there I would definitely check on that swaged pin spring tensioner like Steely suggested. If it is missing you will know because it will be laying on the inside bottom of your door. Easy fix with a cad plated hex standoff and screw with the head of the screw filed or ground down about .060 for clearance. It will also save the brushes/armature in the regulator motor from eventually being destroyed from undue load.
