Oil leak on 2.0 near starter motor
I have an oil leak near the starter motor in my 1969 911-T when the engine runs. There is what looks like a wire screen covered tube coming down through the firewall to a point near the starter motor. Oil comes out the screen and runs along the oil return tube, then drips from the bottom of the engine. When running the leak rate is very high, barely made it the 0.5 miles home from winter storage location. Later, with the engine up on blocks, I added more oil and turned engine over a few times (without starting it) then went underneath to see oil coming out.
The tube comes through the firewall and appears to connect to the air intake, which seems odd. I looked under the air filter and it is dry. I added a photo looking up from below. Can anyone help me figure this out? Thanks, rlund ![]() |

Pull your oil cooler and have it pressure tested if it isn't the oil sender, oil thermostat o-ring or breather tube.
mfi possibly? |

Tim,
Can you help me identify the amber colored tube near the center of the photo in my post? I am new to Porsche repair and do not see this part on any list. If oil is coming out here, is this a 2 out of 5 star difficulty repair, or more complicated? |

That is the breather drain. It connects via 8mm hose to the bottom of the air filter housing. It is normal to see a small amount of oil coming from there. Remember , these cars didn't have modern air oil separators & didn't have to meet todays emission regs.

If the breather tube is throwing that much oil, I have to ask:
How full is you engine oil? Have you over filled it. The oil level should be checked with the car fully warmed up to full operating temperature, parked on a level surface and running. |
