Wow the sunroof is easy to work on!

For anyone contemplating digging into the sunroof I highly suggest it!

I was hesitant to touch it after dealing with other sunroofs that had microswitches and several relays. Access is not a problem thanks to the handy zipper in the headliner.

It may seem like some sort of magical device but really it has only a few moving parts and a grand total of 2 wires in the roof part.

After taking it apart, cleaning out all the 37 year old grease, adjusting it a little, fixing the sheared off coupling with several tight wraps of black 1" gorilla tape (hey, it works and saved $131) and lubing it with a little silicone spray it works flawlessly.

Here are a few helpful links:

Now it's time to start on the less glamourous windshield washer system

The first link is great Jr! (I have a Targa but can still appreciate a well done documentation of a project.)

Thanks for the thread compilation - did your 912E differ much from the '87 and later cars in the threads?

The rails were a little different but it all appears to work the same way. From what I've read they didn't change it much through aircooled production.

I also used the first link when I refurbished mine a few weeks ago. I had it repainted to fix the clear coat and replaced the felt seals. Not a hard job and it sure looks much better.

regards,

If it opened it means the motor is working. Not sure what would have caused the scratches - maybe it needs to be adjusted. New cables are expensive at $140 each, but sounds like that is not the issue. Paying someone to fix it would be expensive (I think) simply because there is a lot of adjusting/fiddling around to do to get it to work smoothly. Like the original poster said, it's a fairly basic mechanism and easily accessible.

The Bentley breaks it down fairly well so you might look at that and see if you want to fool with it for him. It sounds like it might not be "kicking down" properly when first opened to cause it to be getting scratched.. Remove the inner head liner then open slowly and maybe you can see where the problem lies.. Be careful though I don't think you will be able to open it very far with the inner head liner slid back in the hole.
