Hmmm... on the 915 I thought they were torqued to like 36 lbs. Hardly stretching at that torque. But, '86 930, different animal.

Replacement NOT necessary.
Expansion bolt torque = 19 - 22 lb/ft
Regular bolt = 28 - 33 lb/ft

I'm not sure what a 930 "stretch bolt" for an axle flange looks like, but you can see the difference in 915 flange bolts at the following link:

83 3.0L Engine & Trans Swap to 85 3.2L Engine & Trans - Axle Options

Hey Pete,

I just used your wiki to rebuild my 915. I'd never even opened a case on one before. I learned so much about how these things actually work in the process too. Can't believe how relatively easy it really was with the right guidance. Just wanted to tell you thank you very much!

thanks pete. the manual called it a stretch bolt and i was not sure if it had to be replaced.
it also had 2 different torque settings, which confused me. not hard to do.

i saw you posted something about using a kit from harbour freight to put the new seal in. is that still what you recommend using?

i also saw in the manual that it said to heat the cover to put in the bearing, then put in the seal. but it did not say anything about letting it cool. is this a no no?

i also have kendall 80-90 ready to order from pelican. is that the oil to use for a non LSD gearbox?

I'm resealing my trans now. I went to Advanced Auto and got a Bearing Race and Seal Driver set from their loaner program. Worked perfect for the flange seals. Also ordered Curil-T from our host.
