Angry Blasphemy!!!

Proving once again that the internet can be nothing more than the wall in a giant public crapper. Excerpt from: http://autozine.kyul.net/911/911_6.htm

There's probably a lot of truth to this statement. Although, easily by 1980, Porsche had recommitted itself to the 911, as I'm sure that year they started designing the cabriolet version of the 911SC.

It did not take me long to learn teh basic Porsche statistics like horsepower, so I'd assert that the writer of that copy is not familiar with Porsches. Nevertheless, I had heard that the SC was to be the 911's swan song, until popular demand persuaded Porsche to continue the design. Given the car I know the SC to be, that's a believable story. All SCWDP jokes aside, I'd say the SC was substantially different from pre-'78 cars. I'd say the SC is more similar to the Carrera than the pre-'78 cars. I most certainly am not denigrating the early cars, believe me! But the SC does seem like it may have been intended to be the last of a legend.

I'm just impressed that my SC has a top speed of 188 mph! All along I'd been bamboozled by factory specs into thinking it was a mere 140 mph.
Silly me for falling victim to German propaganda...

The good news is that for the mere $.02 it cost me to log into this site today, my car has increased it's top speed by 48 mph. That has to equate to some extra HP, maybe 70 or so. That makes it the CHEAPEST BOLT- ON HORSEPOWER AVAILABLE!!!! No turbos, cams, or carbs needed here!

I've read through most of the editors "callous" remarks on the cars. Sounds like they got a guy from the BMW department to do this.

The SCWDP response is simple: the SC was so damn good that it kept the line alive. A battle-hardened survivor that proved the worth of the 911 and the futility of resistance.

I do think the SC Cab is a very desirable car: more so than any commemerative model. I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

Still want a 928S4 though. Love the coffin-look rear end.

I'm sorry. I guess I missed something. The clip contains largely factual data: names, dates, power outputs that match other sources. So the problem with the clip is....

For some reason I was just thinking of Jack Nicholson's oft repeated tirade about "The truth". I think it was from a "A Few Good Men".

Mostly factual, yes ... what was probably so inflamable was the 'darkest period' low point reference ...

What probably brought Ferry to action ... was the bottom line by accountants that the 911 was the only profitable car in the line ... and that they were losing money on ever 928 rolled out of the factory! The fact that every 911 produced had been profitable, and that it was 'carrying' the rest of the line was a wakeup call! You don't voluntarily kill off your cash cow ... if you have long term survival in mind!

I am a sticker toting member of the SCWDP.

There is nothing wrong with the above article. Everything I have read on the subject points in that direction. This fellow just sums it up and lays it out there for ya.

Yes, dark days indeed. How 'bout those '74-'77 2.7 cars?

The line that bugs me is "detuned to 180 hp".

It would be more correct to say the engine was "tuned" for a broader torque curve which resulted in a reduction in peak hp.

The two most useless specs (for me), are peak hp and top speed.
Show me a torque curve when talking about the performance of a road car.

I also think there is nothing really too off base in the clipping. The facts seem to mirror what I've read about those years with Dr. "Antifreeze" Fuhrmann at the wheel of the company.

The "darkest days" remark was off base, and I too disagree with the "detuned" and "unremarkable" statements... It definately does sound like a BMW freak trying his damnest to be impartial.

Replace "detuned" with "Choked by smog devices" and unremarkable" to "The single most important car of all time, destined to rule the universe", and I'd be happy.

But that's just me.

I agree with the article; 1977 was the apogee of the 911 line. It could only go downhill from there. The cars that followed were only good as parts sources for our '77s.

Obviously, the is propaganda distributed by the Long Hood Brother Hood! Just another feeble attempt to provide the impression to innocent onlookers that they are gaining world dominance.

Believable...

Porsche actually did the same in 1970-71, when the 914-6 was in higher denand than the "flagship" 911. So they quit building the 914-6 to prop up 911 sales, and then decided on the 1.7 and 2.0 version...

Gawd, I LOVE this! I mean, didn't even the "exhausted rooster" of the SCWDP recently post that he thought an ebay Boxter was an attractive car? Lee? You haven't driven an early 911S... not YET, that is. BTW...how's your pool game these days???
