Replacing the stereo in my 86' 911 - Any ideas?

Vito (My 86) is going to be out of commission for the next few weeks with some parts at the paint and body shop. In the mean time I wanted to finally tear out what appears to be a late 90's stereo upgrade.

I want to replace the system with something more modern, but want to keep the 86 styling and WILL NOT be putting in one of those crazy head units that have lights flashing everywhere.

Ideally I would like to find a head unit that is hidden and control the system with my phone, but I am not sure if that is possible or something like this exists. Has anyone seen anything like this?

With all of this being said any ideas?

Delete your radio altogether, save weight and money. Spend the saved money on tuning your exhaust, and enjoy the beautiful sounds that your car makes!

Nakamichi units are reasonably attractive. Or install delete plate with hidden system.

I fitted one of these:
In-Dash MP3 Player with Radio - Jaycar Electronics
It plays USB sticks, SD cards and is a half depth unit. Works well for my needs and suits the style of the dashboard.

^ that looks great in 60's and 70's cars, but terrible in 80's cars.

Blaupunkt Toronto is available and looks period correct.
Also, it has the aux input for a MP3 player.
Does anyone actually carry CDs around anymore?

I do - but not in the 911 - it has the oldest Kenwood Supertuner model - long before CD's

the CD's are the 3rd vehicle, VW Camper - partly just to get them out of the house as the VW plays digital tunes on an ipod/iphone

I just fired up the Retrosound Zuma (same as above, without the iPod control) in my '75. Sounds pretty good.

911s are difficult environments.

I built some mdf rings for my 86 Carrera. Round in the front to get clearance to install a beefy 6.5 inch mid-base driver. I got the silk dome tweeters up on the dash. To bring the base forward, and raise the soundstage.

I tried rectangles in the rear, but went to 6.5 rounds, and used active amp crossover adjustment to give some tweek between cranking and listening modes.

Never got around to adding a sub, certainly wasn't going to add any rear weight, but I cranked it hard on the track, still do.

Never got around to altering what came in my 964s

Most of my gear is ADS, but Japan really broke through with the quality in their (particularly high end) offerings. Most of the stuff I have is over 25 years old, and it still works, hard.

I like this. Haven't seen them sold here in the States, though.

Porsche-badged Becker CR-21 or 22 from a later car. I bought mine used from the owner of a four year old Turbo. Beautiful quality, understated and looks like it was made for my car (79 SC)
