Looks like I have a bad heli coil or a time-cert?? in an aluminum oil pan that I have. Do you need the special tool to get the old one out? What is the better of the 2 styles? Can I just pull the old one out and have it un-wind?
Educate me on this if you don't mind. Finn

If you just pull the old coil out...you run the chance of damaging the threads that it sits in.
When I need to change one...I pull the end out a little so I can get a pair of needle nose pliers or similar tool on it...and inward wind the thing to pull it out of the groove in an inward motion.(to make the coil a smaller diameter) This keeps the threads intact. To put the new one in...chase the Heli threads first...then install as per normal. The little tab at the bottom of the coil should break off at the right time...just make sure the top of the coil is slightly below the parent metal so that the bolted on piece is allowed to be flat against the surface. I think Bob means to chase the threads that the helicoil goes into????? The thickness of the pan is about 1/4" and that that might not be enough threads and because its a through hole and not a hole for a stud that it may not set. I might have to look at drill and tap.
