How do I trim new Targa top side seals?

Where do I trim the side seals? I bought new ones from the Porsche dealer a few years ago, just getting around to installing them. They are a hair too long, and the way that the front wedge piece sits, it's difficult to get it glued in place. I use the Wurth clear cement. If I put a dab of silicone grease on either end of the new seals they slide past the front and rear seals, and sit down pretty well, but still bunch up at the rear. I have them adjusted all the way out and back.

I have searched the archives, but did not find a photo or detailed description of how to trim the replacement seals, only a few posts stating that it is necessary.

Also, I have one stripped side seal screw. What is the best fix for that? I guess that a speed nut and a longer screw is one solution.

This is in an 83 Targa.

Tom,

Are you referring to the rubber seals that attach to the sides of the roof and seal with the windows?

Hi Tom.

I would not cut the side seal until you are ABSOLUTELY sure that is what you need to do. I am fairly certain they are not to be cut.

I am no expert but you will not be able to put back what you cut off if you are cutting for the incorrect reason (or the correct reason for that matter).

Tell us what else you have done to the car - re Targa seals, etc.

Car has all original seals. I wouldn't have changed the side seals, but the protrusion that fits around the vent window had broken off, so I was getting some wind noise and leakage there. Top seals up perfectly and sits beautifully on the car, otherwise.

The replacement seals from Porsche are different. There are a bunch of posts saying that they have to be trimmed, but I cannot find guidance on exactly how to do it.

OK - if you have seen posts for the side seals that screw onto the targa top. I have not seen them but I have not looked.

I must be mistaken in my assumption.

Mine are "broken" at the same place you mention.

I had new seals put on my 86. While, if you are really looking they appear to be too long it doesn't present any problem. door seals tight and they just kinda go with it.
