Lower Steering Shaft
I currently have my steering rack out for a rebuild and noticed that the needle bearing (which lives inside the rubber bushing in the smuggler's box) has deteriorated - I am therefore replacing it. However, the result is that the (once smooth) surface on the steering shaft is now badly pitted. Do you think it's possible to machine a little off the surface or is this too far gone?

Take a look at the solution I posted in the steering bearing thread.

Thanks. That's a great solution, but I would prefer to retain the stock arrangement.

Then you are probably looking at a new shaft or maybe you can have it welded, hardened and re-ground. Otherwise, the new bearing won't last very long.
