Opinion on this '84 Carrera?
GR Auto Gallery
This would be my first Porsche. I'm in New York so I'd have to have a local shop do a PPI then have it shipped. |

Nice lookingcar!
I bought my '84 for 16K, last year, the dealer is taking the Angels cut on this one. Get a national craigslist search app, you can save several thousand over a dealers price. Also check with your local PCA chapter, the price will be on the higher end of the spectrum but will be slightly lower than a dealer. PCA folks tend to document obsessively and will understand the PPI request. I bought both my 911s off of craigslist!

If it's as nice as it sounds, I don't think the price is high. Miles are low, condition looks nice. If it runs well, checks out with PPI and everything sounds good, go for it. I wouldn't try to lowball the guy though because he'll probably see $24k out of it.

Also, I agree that you should go there and drive it back. If you want help with the drive, and can drop me off in NJ on the way back, I'll go with you over a weekend...

For a data point, I paid $20k for a '84 black on black, 53k miles, VG condition about 8 years ago. Yeah, long time but prices probably dipped in 08, 09. Glad to see they have recovered.

While you are in Grand Rapids picking it up (for the drive back we are talking you into) time it such so,you can attend a track day at Grattan. One of the best little Midwest tracks around.

Rocky... that's a beautiful 911! Clean.
Just from the photos, and if I were in the market... I'd snap that up. I looked in the Pelican car section just for entertainment and there's an '85 listed for $30k. 1985 Porsche Carrera

I found my DREAM car (an '86 911) in great shape. The PPI was perfect, had low miles, etc.
People said I paid $2-3k more than what I should have paid. To that I say, oh well! I've had the car for 10 years now and it's been a perfect companion. To me it was worth spending a little more for my absolute dream car in perfect shape. My $0.02. Good luck! Al |

Opinion: If these cars are bringing this kind of money I couldn't be happier because it seems like I can barely start to enjoy mine before something else starts to cost more $$$...
Fact: The thought has crossed my mind to sell with a kid on the way...You may see my car in the sad/abandoned Porsche thread before I let it go ![]()

Make sure that someone who knows the cars inspects it carefully for rust. That undercarriage looks like it's seem some Michigan winters. Old 911s have their special places for rust.

Is anyone worried about the transmission mount and rear sway bar? They look very rusty. I have an 85 and mine aren't nearly that rusty and my cars been outside most of it's life (california).

There are less expensive deals out there if you look hard enough, although those coupes are demanding a premium these days. I'd say low $20's tops, depending on your locale. |

That car looks a hell of a lot better on top than on the bottom rear, call that a rusty trombone.

There are a lot of really nice Porsche Guys in Grand Rapids. Check Western Michigan Region for membership, or contact Rick Riley. Someone there either knows this car and its PO or will go check it out for you. Rick is a great guy and might go look at the car for you or refer you to someone who would. PM me and I will give you ricks email address. I just do not want to post it here.

PS: I do not think you will find a decent 911 (84 to 89) for under $25K. Anything much under $20 will be a mid year (74-77) or an SC (78-83) and I guarantee you that by the time you have what you want to drive you will have $25 or more in it. Ask me how I know?
