Valve Cover Gaskets
Doing valve adj myself this weekend (using Wayne's book) 1st for a Porsche and have a question. Is there only one way to put the new gaskets on (from Pelican of course)? Does the side with the wording on it go against the head or the valve cover?
Also, how do I check for excessive guide wear? I read to try and move the stems back and forth but what's excessive? Anything else to look for? TIA

The gaskets only go on one way. Doesn't matter which side has the printing on it. As for excessive guide wear I seem to recall John Walker saying anything more than 1/8" is too much although that sounds like an awful lot of movement to me. Maybe bumbing this post back to top will get some more responses for you.

rocking the spring retainer side to side can give you a clue about possible guide wear, but the guides tend to wear more on the end toward the head of the valve. if you can see 1/8" movement at the spring end, which would be unusual, the valve head end of the guide would be more. depending on how firmly you work it back and forth, the noticable play will vary, due to the potential to actually bend the valve stem (not permanently). so go lightly. a guide with 1/8" play would be sucking mass quantities of oil and fouling plugs with a crusty buildup. 2.7s had bad guide wear problems with the original copper guides. 1/2"+ at the valve head was common.

Thanks for the info. As I understand it you just use a screwdriver to see if the valve stems moves laterally inside it's guide...correct? Does it matter where in the piston's cyle you try this? I was thinking that any valves that were seated would not be very "movable", or does this not matter either?
Thanks and sorry for all the questions, it'll probably be clearer when I open it up. Later
