Question Intermitent loss of power and running very hot

Hi All,

1978 911SC

OK, so went for a ride on Sunday.

Lately, the car has no power whatsoever until it is fully warmed up. Will not react to pressing on the gas pedal and almost stall until warmed up.

Once it is warmed up, it seems to run OK. It will run very hot but OK. Then intermittently it will lose power. Then all of a sudden it goes away again.

One other thing to note. After the car is warm, if you stop at a store for a minute and turn the car off, it will not have any power when you start it back up again until it runs for a few minutes.

Any ideas what to check?

Thanks for your help.

Mike

I had this happen on a VW years ago. The spark was not advancing. Retarded timing makes engine unresponsive and run hot. If you have a timing light, check the timing and see if your distributor is advancing as it should. Just a thought. I am not sure about this but since no one else has responded, that's my two cents.

timing is a good place to start. could be sticking.

then i would look at control pressures. actually i would still look at these. could be your cold running issue

Timing or running really lean.
Check timing and fuel system pressures as previously mentioned. You can check distributor advance isn't locked up by rotating the rotor a little and it should snap back.

the hot start thing is residual pressure bleed-down. put on a later model SC larger accumulator and a new fuel pump check valve. you can do a quick check for residual pressure simply by removing the air filter cover and lifting up the sensor plate arm to feel if it has pressure on it or not. should feel like lifting a pound or thereabouts. or it will have nothing. gauges are the normal way.

Smile

Update: Checked all things that were suggested. All looked good.

I then checked the decel valve. I loosened the lock nut and turned the stem 1/4 of a turn counter clockwise.

The car is running like a dream.

Thanks all for your help.
