front condensor fan
Does the front condesor fan sit in the trunk? Anyone have a picture of this? I'm going to add it to my car and have no clue where it mounts.

It is in the smugglers box on top of the condenser housing. You will have to pry off the clamps (good luck without breaking these) that holds the lid on. You will then see the fan assembly and condenser.

Sounds like you are talking about the evaporator and fan. I'm looking for the front condensor and fan. Thanks for the info though.

Yes, the evaporator assembly lives in the smuggler's box. The factory front condenser fan has it's own (very flimsy plastic) housing. It sits right over the top of the condenser, closer to the driver's side (next to the battery), in front of the fuel tank. If you are installing one, it is recommended that you ad an in-line fuse to the circuit, as these fans have been known to short out, causing an electrical fire. ;)

If you are talking about the AC condensor mounting at the front of the car, yes there is a fan, and its not in the smugglers truck on my 78SC. It is located inside the truck area at the very front. It has a faily large black cover that looks like a big horn. I can smap a pic if you want later on.

that would be great. I think I've got a line on a full set-up. I wonder if I'll need to cut a hole for the fan to blow through or if there is a plate to remove... I'll have to go look.

ya.. I saw that diagram. I'm just interested to see where it sits in the trunk area. I have a pretty good idea with the discrpition you gave. I just need to go look at my car and see if I have a space already for it.

If you don't have a cut out already there, the stock fan will not work very well. There is a space (plenum) above the stock condenser that the fan blows into. It's part of the stamping of the sheet metal of the floor of the front of the trunk. If you put a stock fan over the hole you must cut in the floor, it will blow straight down over the condenser in one place and not over the entire surface like the factory blower would.
Try I.C.E. in San Diego, Ca. they have a front aftermarket blower attached to a plenum that will act like the stock unit. If you have a stock blower that needs replacing, their blower motor is much more powerful and will move much more air than a stock unit. BOB W. |
In the above picture and the diagram there is a funnel that appears to distribute the air across the unit. Is this not so?

The link to the diagram that pbs911 shows, item 14 is a plenum that is part of the sheet metal. In my car ('81) this not a seperate piece but part of the stamping of the trunk floor. There is also a black plastic piece that you can see in the other picture, this is attached to the blower motor.

oh... now I see what you are saying. It looks like that stamping is available. I'll buy it and weld it in unless I can find a car at the junkyard to cut it out of. Thanks for the info.

Here are pics from the isdie of the trunk area and beneigth the front w/o the blower and condensor. This should provide you with some insite on where to cut. Notice on the inside of the truch there is also an air inlet on the verticle plan of the front panel in addition to the opening above the condensor.

I called them for a few of the parts. I found a condensor with all the gaurds for $80. They wanted $200. I'm going to get the fan assembly from them this next weekend. I'm going to order the under car condensor next week and after it is installed I'm going to drive up to phoenix to get hoses built. Then I just need the compressor and I'm ready to charge it up... I hope.
