Barn find with Story?

Short story Bought a couple of Barn finds.

And this is one of them that I'm trying to get the story straight. While I'm waiting the COA of From Porsche and called some friends with Porsche Corp to pull some history for me. The Story i got from the guy. and is a very very reliable guy. Raced Porsche's for 50+ years. He was a Dealer in the 70's at one time too. SO a 1966 911, But the car was going down the Assembly line as a 912 White. The a call came in for a White 911. So before the motor was installed for the 912 they put in the motor mounts and hardware in for a 911. The car has the Wood package and all the stuff of a 911. It has been in his barn 30+ years. But the car has a 912 Vin.

See what you guys thought's were.

You probably have a 912. Not necessarily a bad thing. I had a 66 912 and loved it. Any 66 is a great find. Has 5 gauge dash. Fix it up and enjoy. Did you check for rust?

Nice find. Sounds fishy on the factory conversion but still nice find/car.

Stranger things have happened. A restored '66 912 is still a $50-60k car. That is definitely an early 911 engine. Whatever the truth turns out to be, I would restore it, leave that engine in it, and have a great time.

And ditch the S bumper. Just doesnt look right on an early car. But if it is a real S front it is worth some money. More than enough money to buy a nice correct bumper and perfect deco etc.

My Dad used to say, "don't swallow that, Harry, that's horse-ish."

The story is far-fetched. The car is nice, it's a 912 with a 911 transplant. Restore, drive and have fun.

Cheers

Matt makes a good point (as Matts tend to do
Get it back on the road and have fun with it. You'll love the early engine, or if you want a 912 engine in it you can sell the existing 6-cyl for enough cash to buy a nicely prepped 4-banger. A real S bumper in rust-free condition is worth a nice bit, too, as Matt pointed out. -- Matt

Probably a later conversion, unless the COA tells you a different, and way more interesting, story. Restore it, enjoy it. Install some sway bars if it does not have some already, you'll enjoy it even more.

Now that I am off my phone and can see more, it also has later horn grills, turn signals and S deco on the rear bumperettes as well. Rear grill appears correct but has been "ruined" with paint. That diamond plate on the dash where the wood belongs is also very attractive...

Still if it is a solid chassis it's a great little car to play with.

Ok Just got off the Phone with my friend at Porsche N.A and that it was very coming for Germany to swap cars. He has seen and heard of this # of times. Called and checked on the COA they said it will take some time on this car. So lets see.

I hope they did swap it out at the factory. That makes for some interesting conversation.

Subscribed.
Seems unlikely to me since 911s and 912s differed by more than the mounts.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you

did you run the numbers on the engine to figure out what year it might be?

"The wood package" is some trim stuck on over engine-turned aluminum. Seats are from a '75 Anniversary edition 911... Front bumper is wrong for a '66. S trim is wrong for a '66. The turnsignal and brake lenses look like '73+ units. The electrical panel cover sitting inside the car is for a 1970-on 911. Many many changes have been made to the car ex-factory. I'll be surprised if the CoA says anything other than 912. But the engine is a "period correct" 911 engine and that alone is worth something.

Willing to put money that it was not done at the factory. A 912 that was converted later in life and a game of telephone that exaggerated the story. However, not a bad thing to have as it can be just as fun as a 911.

If you look closely you'll see that the angle is opposite of how it should be. I'm pretty sure that's the wood dash trim from a RHD '65 that was just hung over the LHD switches.

What is the engine number? That should clarify quite a bit.

If you flip it over, it will fit just fine
