I've been posting my progress on the distributor rebiuld over on the "new" 964 bbs.(see, busted dist. belt) But I'm in need of some serious advice so I've come to the brain trust on this board. So here goes, When I removed my distributor the cyl.# 1 mark on housing and TDC(Z1) mark on the pulley did not exactly match. I've made good reference as to where it was(pictures), but I'm wondering if when reinstalling the dist. I should make an effort to make the marks line up(maybe one more tooth around on the distributor)? I don't believe the dist was ever out the car before and as it was when I removed it was off (rotor late 15deg. to dist housing mark at TDC(Z1). any opinions?

The most correct position is when the rotor is pointing toward the notch on the dist. housing, the rotor is pointing to number 1 cable on the cap and the distributor housing is in the "correct" position. The "correct" position is usually determined by the orientation of the dist. cap hold-down clips.
If it weren't for the limited room to rotate the distributor housing to adjust ignition timing, the dist. housing can be in any position as long as you maintain the rotor-to-no. 1 cylinder relationship (w/piston at TDC, end of compression) and the spark plug wires aren't twisted around the cap. Well, I reinstalled the distributor last night and oddly the cyl#1 rotor position was not he same when I took it out nor was it lined up with the dist. housing mark, but it was closer. It occuered to me that since this car uses the DME to set the timing that perhaps as long as its close the electronics can compensate. BTW the car runs great!
