What was the result of your injector cleaning?
 

Im passing through all of the wear parts on my relatively new 87 3.2 and have been debating having the injectors cleaned, likely by marren as they are about fifteen minutes from me. I just adjusted my throttle cable, which gave me back about 20% of my throttle travel and im looking for other places there may be power and efficiency left on the table. 100k on my car, well cared for and stock. Im getting slightly low mpgs (21 max with lots of hwy driving) and think my tune up may not be complete. Checking the 02 sensor is also on the docket. Since most cleaning outfits offer full reports im curious, what reasults did you all get from your injector cleaning and was it worth it?

I'm at 330,000 with an '85 3.2 and have never cleaned the injectors except running Techron through a few times a year... so I'm curious along with you R-mm what the opinion / results are on this.

I just installed a 3.6 motor in my 89 that had been sitting in the PO's garage for the last 12 years ... the injectors came in a box,along with most of the other engine parts ...
I had them ultrasonic cleaned and replaced the dried out "O" rings and when i fired up the engine for the first time it ran perfectly from the start.

I think it was well worth it !

I've had 2 sets cleaned in the last couple of years - from an 87 and an 88. The report said they were in pretty good shape before cleaning, I think mid 50's, and they cleaned up to 60. For me, it was more of a peace of mind thing - knowing that the injectors aren't the cause of any issues, and having new screens and o-rings installed.

I ran 2 bottles of techron thru a full tank (1 bottle per 12 gal) back when I first got my 3.2. Gas mileage has gone up 2mpg on every tank since then, I just plan to keep doing that once or twice a year.

I'm going to pull mine next week and have them cleaned for the same reasons Mconn sites. I'll post my results here.

Techron is a great product but won't resurrect 20+ yr old injectors, Tim Marren can & will; he has a proven reputation and is one of the best at his trade!

Techron worked for me. A number of issues went away after I used it. Not magic, but worth it every now and then - I'm due to run some through the system.

I had my injectors cleaned by Witchhunter. My car started badly and idled badly. Once I had the injectors done - starts better, idles smooth.

Before I pulled them and sent them off, I ran all kinds of stuff through there - Lucas injector cleaner, seafoam, etc....When they didn't work - pulled them and sent them off.

So, if you aren't having problems - leave it alone. If it starts badly and idles rough, pull them and send them off.

I sent mine to Mr. Injector for an ultrasonic cleaning, new screens, o-rings and pintles. Idle and low rpm running is now noticeably better and smoother. Feels better throughout the rev range. And that was after running a couple different injector cleaners through with no apparent affect.
For the $100 it cost I would highly recommend it.

For all of you who use Techron (sold at Chevron stations under the name Pro Guard), Kudos to you. The stuff is great, and my shop "fixed" more P-cars by recommending a switch to Chevron, than we did doing tune-ups. We in CA are lucky to have Chevron, sold with a bit of Techron in every tankful, and it really works. My shop only bothered with injectors after a minimum of two tankfuls of Chevron in a customer car. Only then did we evaluate the car for possible injector-related issues, after, of course, doing a leak-down test, ignition and spark plug evaluation, CO% check, etc.

My '82 SC, now at 205K miles, had an injector fail about 6, maybe 7, years ago. I replaced it, and the car runs perfect all of the time. Chevron is my only fuel choice, Pro Guard is added once/year, and Stabil is added for the summer - when it's too hot to drive the car.

25 year old car, whats the hurt in pulling them and getting them cleaned. You'll get some new o'rings and you'll get a report on condition. My 87 gets 25 to 26 mpg on the highway so you have some room to get better. I had mine done when apart for a top end. Can't remember the "before" report if there was one.

Using Techron prior to an oil change is a good idea. I would not use it till you are about a tankful of fuel away from an oil drop..thats just me. Any blow-by when the engine is warming up (quite a while with a 911) will put those powerful Techron detergents/solvents in the lubricating oil.

Sending injectors out to be cleaned is Okay, but at $30-$50 each plus down time..I rather just spend the extra cash and use all new, if the injectors are getting old or in doubt..again, thats just me.

Five0 motorsports sells new Bosch injectors for DME 911s at about $72.50 each or the Lucas (really made by Siemens) disc type injectors for 911s at $60 each.

I've used the disc type injectors..they stay very clean and serviceable but don't atomize fuel as well as the pintle tip Bosch injectors.

Watch Five0 as the Bosch injectors go on sale from time to time..I bought a set of six brand new injectors for my 911 a few years ago for less than $200

Marren charges $25 per so $150 all in. For me it is easily worth it. I have a Bosch o2 sensor on my desk that I'll install tonight. Going to check my MPGs on a 400mi round trip I'll be making this weekend, get the injectors cleaned next week then check the MPGs again. I don't think anything is horribly wrong, but I really do want to get the car to a tight baseline and be able to more or less rule these things out should I encounter any stumbling, rough idling etc in the future.

Marren does offer before/after reports and I'll happily post mine here. I drive mostly on the weekends so the downtime doesn't bother me.

I much prefer BG 44K over Techron...

If your 911 runs great and seems to drive fine, why spend $150 to pull them and send them out to be cleaned? Because if it is running fine, then they are clean. I have been using Techron for years. Fantastic stuff! My Wife a while back took her Dodge mini van in for service at the dealer. They talked her into cleaning the injectors. Even though it was running great. I really hate those guys!
