Is the cat heat shield SS or mild?

I'm guessing the cat heat shield on my 3.2 is some grade of stainless or it would likely be looking a lot worse by now... can someone confirm? I'm about to re-attach it and want to make sure there is nothing I should to to corrosion proof it before I do.

True, will do this afternoon.

Actually I had my magnetic pickup on it while I was looking for a dropped fastener. Funny I can't remember if it was dragging on the shield or not.

I'm pretty certain that mine is aluminum.

would the factory put a thin-gauge aluminum panel that close to a heat source?

It's not all that thin. But since I drove to work today, I went out at lunch to take a closer look. I now believe it is zinc-plated steel, not aluminum, not stainless. Appears to be signs of surface rust where ever it has been scuffed.

Mine is stainless on my '87 Carrera. Stainless, despite being called stainless, does discolor and develop slight corrosion. Salt and other debris can cause it to "rust."

Hit it with an abrasive pad (Scotchbrite red) and some degreaser and it will clean right up. Mine is a clean brushed/scratched finish now.
