In need of a trailer

Does anybody in the Lafayette, IN region have a trailer to help out a fellow porsche owner. I need to take my 911SC to the shop but the closest reliable porsche mechanic is 30 miles away. I will gladly pay for gas and throw in a beer!
Or could you guys give me some tips. On where to rent trailers or haulers?
Thanks guys have a great week!

P.S. cant wait to get my porsche going again i just wanna drive!

Chris,

Do you know anyone who is a member of AAA? The distance of 30 miles is about 1+ hour drive by a tow truck. Before I had my car trailer, I used AAA for this kind of service. I pushed my car out from the garage and parked it on the street. Call for road assistance and they will come to your aid. Good luck.

U-Haul also rents trailers pretty reasonably if you just need it for the day. They also have tow dollies, but I'd go for a trailer.

I would call the mechanic and see what towing service they recommend. I can't imagine the shop doesn't have a relationship with a local service that won't hurt your car. Probably won't be much more expensive than renting a trailer from Uhaul.

Thanks guys. Good call on asking the mechanic, My last resort is AAA that my friend owns, but they charge $4 per mile, which i thought is a bit steep. Is it just me or are all tow services that expensive?

$4 per mile, if it is a 30 mile trip, is a pretty reasonable tow bill @ $120. Insurance on tow trucks is insanely expensive. My concern would be the driver knowing what he is doing. It isn't exactly a profession that attracts the best and brightest. They have been known to attach to points which will harm some cars (A arms, axles, etc). If you go the AAA route it looks like you can just sign up for AAA Plus for $100 then use that. It includes up to 4 100 mile tows but apparently you have to sign up then wait 4 days to use it. Also not sure they will tow to the garage of your choice or the morality of signing up just to use the service in a way it isn't intended.

2 suggestions:

If a friend has AAA with just a minimun towing distance, he/she can upgrade tot he 100 mile town and it's pro-rated for the year...When I did it, I only has less than 2 months till renewal, so it was only 8 bux...Had to wait like 5 days to use it.

2) I've towed a 911 over a mountain pass behind a Toyota PU with just a car dolly....Rental on it was only $65....G'luck

Chris,

Get the AAA plus membership. You get free 100 miles towing and pay extra in excess of 100 miles. And you could bring your car to the garage/shop of your choice.

Successful story guys!!!! So on wenesday I paid my AAA Plus membership, on friday at noon I called tripple AAA and requested a tow. They sent me a flatbed at no additional charge, the tow was succesfull and i did not have to pay anything and this have 3 100 mile tows this year at no charge. Getting AAA was a smart choice. Thank you all for your help and inputs.

Thats her on the flatbed. All the mechanic had to do to her was retune her and put in a new battery. But he clearly knew what he was doing, he is a very capable guy. His shop is Griffins Service Center, while i was there the indianapolis porsche dealer shop called him twice for specific intructions on porsche 928 and 944s. This was really conforting knowing that they rely on his help. I recommend him for anybody in the Indy/Chicago area, and best of all his prices are fair.
Here is his website, griffin's service center - Home
He fixed her up good and now she runs like a champ!

Congratulations! Also, it looks like she is flying in the picture.

I had a tow by AAA a week ago when my car started making bad noises whilst I drove. I got a flatbed at no additional charge and the guy doing the towing really knew his stuff. It was a good experience. He dropped it straight into my garage.

Now I need to get the fuel pump going, the rest of the heater backdate done, the engine mounts replaced, and the third brake light taped back in place.
