My 1971 911 Speedster ...

Some of you may have been following my journey here:

Cutting up my early 911 - project speedster cont.

Based on a 1971 911E Targa. 2.2liter E spec, Webers, 901 tranny, Fuchs, sport exhaust, Center-fill tank, and minimalist everything.

After several "once-overs" I filled the tank with a half gallon of gas and turned on the system. Leaks! Traced it back to the OEM fuel pump but I had an Airtex (spelling) as a backup. After a quick run to the local Napa we where in business. Then no spark! Trouble-shooting let to a "just walk away" decision. Then after studying the wiring diagram I realized I switched a wire somewhere. It fired right up with about 5 min of white smoke. Once cleared and I double checked for leaks. It was warmed up and ready for a quick trip around the area and then back to the neighborhood....

I took these pics while waiting for the wife and kids to bring me the rest of the gas.

The carbs need syncing, want to look it over really good before its first real drive and waiting on registration, thats it.

I'd like to buy a center hood fill tank, where did you buy yours from?

I didn't buy it. I built it. I used a 3.2 tank, a modified filler neck from a 55 VW gas tank, and a 100mm gas cap from a VW bus. I added the fin with holes.

Congratulations. I have been following this build for quite a while.

I know you are excited to get it out of the garage and driving on its own power.

It looks great! The windscreen really makes the car.

I am interested to know how the height of the windscreen works. Do you have air hit you right in the face? You might need a wickerbill on the top edge to deflect it over your head.

I really wanted the windscreen to be as low as possible without having to pick bugs out of my teeth every time I drove it. I ended up taking some side view photos with me in the seat. I ended up shaving the seat cushion foam by 50mm. As far as I can tell this works to get my head just below the airflow. Goggles may be a wise choice for longer trips.

Great to see your results, nice job. And way to go with sticking with the project.
The windshield looks great and does really bring it along. Are you still going to do the side (door top) parts of the windscreen? That was the piece that really tied it all together for me in your original drawings. and will be the finishing touch as far as the windshield to clam shell oneness goes.
So glad to see you out driving your cool looking spyder!

Cheers Richard

I decided to go with this windscreen instead of the full wrap around. I had to make a decision at some point to just get the ball rolling in time to enjoy the car this spring/summer. You never know, I could tackle that project over the winter.

Door handles will not be smoothed over, I like the industrial look to them.

Here's the car that really inspired me. I really like the paint scheme. Taken at my visit to the museum last year.

Weather was great this past Saturday, perfect for a morning drive. Ended up at the local "Coffee and Cars" gathering. This car is super fun to drive!

Been following you at the Lafayette Cars & Coffee... I'm actually in the last pic, way in the back

'MissEva' is Heidi and Franny's '58 356 that's spectacular.

Great stuff.
