Cop was a "huge 911 fan"...
This really isn't a technical post, although it may be related to my tranny swap and the taller gearing???
I got stopped by a cop last Saturday, 54 in a 40. After he ran my license through, he said he was a "huge 911 fan" and was "seriously interested in getting one...what year should he get?". After a friendly little discussion (into which I artfully inserted the comment that I had recently swapped the engine and tranny, with taller gears, hence my inadvertent speeding!), he handed me back my license and said "nice car, drive safe". Not even a lecture, or scolding. I was shocked. I wonder what would've happened if I had been driving a Vette? Roger

Funny, isn't it? Got pulled over by a motorcycle cop for leaving the Stop sign too early, as the ped. had not yet put their foot on the curb, from the crosswalk across the street from me. Fair enough, I'll take that hit.
But no, he gave me only a warning then we went deep-diving on 911s, quirks, etc. Was actually a lot of fun!

Got pulled over and had a chat with a local one day. Not speeding or anything, just wanted to check out my car. I let him have the full tour, engine, trunk, everything. A little professional courtesy for a fellow emergency worker. Most of the time they will not pull me or the wife over if we are not being absolutely stupid since I have my work insignia on all the cars.

One night in Milwaukee I stepped out into the crosswalk when the light changed green and I got the walk sign. A car decided to turn right immediately in front of me, almost running over my foot. I slammed my hand down on his rear windshield as he was going by and shouted an expletive. He stopped and flipped out on me. A cop on a bike came riding up and went off on me, called in backup, ran my license, the whole deal. I explained to him that I had the walk sign and almost got run over in the crosswalk, and I was just alerting the driver to that fact. Cop didn't want to hear it. They let the driver go and I proceeded to get a 10 minute lecture.

Happened to me in Munich Germany once in the nineties. But the cop was not interested in my 75 BMW 1600 car but in my California driver's license. It happened in a road trap for drunk drivers! It was about 2 AM and I was coming back from a night out at a jazz bar. Of course they serve drinks there also. I thought I had had it. When the cop came to my window asking for driver's license and car registration I answered I had neither with me, only my California driver's license. He wanted to to see it. Then he said: Look what I have! And he produced a Hawaii driver's license. I duly admired it and he waved me a friendly good-bye with the admonishment to drive safely!

We were in Germany last month. Last week I got a speeding ticket in the mail...89 kmh in an 80 kmh (55 in a 50). Really? You have to send a ticket across the Atlantic for a measly 5 mph over the limit? Apparently the rental car company paid it and charged it to my c-card, $32. Vielen Dank!

I asked him what he planned to do with it. He said just a "fun car". I took the "safe" approach (James May's advice) and told him to get an '84-'89.

Hmm. I had nearly the opposite experience last week while driving along I-5 through the Grapevine.
A Sheriff's SUV tailed me as I was driving the speed limit (65 mph) between two pick-up trucks. We were going uphill, so all the three of us (2 p/u and myself) moseyed along at 65mph while 4 or 5 other cars nearby (who perhaps hadn't noticed the LEO) gradually pulled away from us as they were traveling a few mph faster. The LEO followed us for a bit, and then passed us in the fast (#1) lane (clearly staring at me as he did so). He got ahead of us about 1/4 of a mile, and then slipped over into the slow (#4) lane between tractor trailers. As the trucks are limited to 55 mph, we eventually passed the Sheriff vehicle. At that point the LEO switched lanes to resume pacing us/me. Finally he got impatient and took off, eventually pulling over someone ahead for maybe doing 5 mph over the limit. Somehow I don't think he was just trying to admire my car.

When I first got the 911 I noticed I got a lot of attention from law enforcement. I had a local Sheriff tailgate me so bad one day it was really making me nervous. I slowed way down -- speed limit was 45 and I slowed down to 20 to make a point. Finally he went on his way. Later on I was talking to some friends at a party and mentioned it. Someone told me that if the local LEOs see an old car they run the plates to see if it was stolen. If that's true, I sure would appreciate it if my car was ever stolen, even if it is annoying at times.
I've had mostly good experiences. Last time I was pulled over was for having a brake light out. I knew I wasn't speeding so I didn't know why he was pulling me over. He flew up on me and flicked his lights on right as I was entering a downhill curve on a dark road at night. There was no shoulder so I waited until I was out of the curve to pull over and he yelled at me for not stopping fast enough. I told him I didn't think it was safe and he gave me a lecture about "you must stop immediately". I told him my recollection of the law was you stop "as soon as it is safe to do so". So that's what you get for being safe. If I had to do it over 100 times I would've done the same thing every time. |

When my wife and I test drove our SC and she was at the wheel, we had a local cop following us at every turn but didn't turn on his lights. We naturally got nervous and pulled into an apartment complex. The cop walked up and the absolute very first thing he said was "....Ma'am, you look nice driving this car. Is it carbureted or fuel injected". He further said that he used to own a '69 911 that was carbureted and would always give him problems when it got humid. The reason he was following us is that the dealer tag on the car was expired, but he said to not worry about it. He knew the garage where we got the car from. In leaving us, he said to my wife "have you taken it out on the highway yet?" My wife said no, to which he replied "oh, take her out on RT 384 and open her up and see what she'll do". Needless to say, my wife agreed to us getting the car, right there on the spot.

I was not so lucky in Washington state 2 days ago. Got fined $144 for going 84 in a 70MPH zone. Cop was all business. The only words spoken were when he asked for my license and registration. Not a Porsche fan I guess or maybe it was because I had Canadian plates!

Out of state usually means ticket in my experience, or at least a different attitude towards the driver. I have been pulled over twice for doing 5mph over. Best thing to do is apologize once they tell you why they pulled you over, seems to have worked for me a couple of times. Mind you I drive a GTI, doesn't get the same attention as a 911.

Had local Sheriffs Deputy pull me and wife over the 2nd day we had the 911. We were just out cruising around ,enjoying the curvy country roads. We drove through a 25 mph zone and I accelerated out of there a little bit, maybe hit 45 or 50 as the speed limit sign changed.
Anyway, the Deputy was in a spot where we didn't see him. he pulled out and caught up to us a bit later, turned on his lights and I pulled over. He slowly comes up to the car with his hand on his grip, looking quite leery. Then he stated he had to do 80 mph just to catch up to me...I asked him why as I was not going any where near that fast. Not sure if he liked that or not but let us go anyway.

This summer a friend and I were travelling in convoy at 120-140mph passing every other car on the road for mile upon mile without any worries of being pulled by the police
God bless driving in Germany

Venetian - are you going to pay the ticket? Often wonder if folks from Canada bother with that. I also always notice that the cars in WA with northern plates drive plenty fast. I understand it is the metric conversion failure, brain-wise...
Get pulled over? Both hands on steering wheel where they can see them, look of penance, and "Gosh officer, I had no idea!"

Great thread!
I had this happen in my 997TT a few years back and again a few months ago in my C3. 94 in a 35 at 1am with a buddy about to puke any sec while I was looking for a place to pull over. The fact I was the DD turned the stop into a no ticket 30minute love fest with the officer and my "weird colored porshhhhe I just love" (Cobalt Blue) And yes, he did puke after we stopped. Never thought about pulling over directly on Lennox Road and shoving his head out until Atlanta's finest got involved and made that a good place to park. The C3 stop I was actually not even speeding, thought I was but wasn't. He was admittedly bored and wanted to just see the car up close. He'd just bought an SC! First thing he asked was if I was in a hurry. Standard "you are about to get a ticket" opener right? Thought I was screwed until the next words were about where to get Fuchs restored in Atlanta. Still trade emails with him from time to time but I did about crap myself when he pulled me over. Guilty conscience. :-)
