Post Did Porsche ever produce a 993 Turbo cabrio?

Hi there,

A friend of mines bet 50$ on the fact that Porsche produced 14 cabrio 993's with the 3.6L single-turbo of the 964. Is it true? I'm really sceptical.

Thanks alot and sorry for my bad english

massively delayed response

The answer to your question is yes. (See my post in June on this topic.) I drove one three weeks ago. Porsche factory produced 50+ 993s with the 965 single turbo drivetrain, suspension and brakes in 1995.

Merv, is this why you won't take your car around corners?

Tsk! Tsk!

No, I'll freely admit that I'm not 100% confident handling 400HP around corners, Vic. I honestly don't think u'd be too in a 400HP RWD Coupe Turbo's are entirely different to the naturally aspirated counterparts when it comes to cornering. You should know that, being the star driver that you are

Porsche's are not built like american cars that twist the chassis under acceleration. The gearbox is directly connected to the engine so the only torque transmitted through the chassis is opposing the acceleration of the wheels. This only tends to make the car squat in the rear and lift in the front, vs. the american car having the engine attached at the front and the rear end attached at the rear and using the chassis to resist the torque
transfer through the driveshaft creating that wonderful lifting of the front left tire under a launch.

Porsche engineers already thought about this when they built the first 930 Cabriolets

If I were to track the car, the chassis would tend to twist under high speed hard cornering, which is OK cause I don't intend to track my daily driver.

Merv, my car sucks HP wise at roughly 50% of what you have. I do wish I had alot more as I am ready for more gruntola. Especially trying to keep up with the cheats and rich folks at PCV events.

I'm no star driver, I just have my fun in the corners and feel the need to convince everyone in a 911 that this is what they are made for.

By the way, there is a 934 replica for sale in Melbourne. 400HP, full race prep and I believe road registered. All for $67K. You could not built it for twice that. Also, I think it's road registered. I think I want that car.

Sounds like a good deal Vic. $67k (AUD everyone) for a race prep'd turbo is pretty cheap. You should get your mates to do a PPI for you and consider it.

It's not the orange one in Cheltenham, is it?

BTW, I thought your car was already track prep'd (suspension wise)? If that's the case, you don't need to invest much to have a setup like mine. You'll be spanking 930's in no time

Merv, thee is an orange one for sale that is GENUINE(!) in Melbourne aswell. THe one I am talking about is white and was built by Autoart about 10 years ago from what I understand. I have seen it on the track plenty of times and it is a dream car to me. Dunno about daily transport though.

The only thing done to my car is Koni adjustables because the old ones where shot. I think these are the same as yours. If they are, (and you haven't already), give them a tighten up for Sunday!

Ah OK, I don't know of the white one, only the 934 replica Orange one (w/full roll cage), which is being sold at Brooklyns in Cheltenham, along with a Purple '85 RUF BTR, that I test drove last year. That car is still there Awesome car to drive, but in ratty condition for the asking price of $89k. It had full race suspension tho, so it handled fantastically Mine feels faster tho

Yes I have KONI adjustables. Not sure if "THEY" left me with the KONI tightening tool tho, so I might get you to do it for me when we meet up at the SHELL, if it's a quick easy task that is?!?!?

I have never heard of this place in Cheltenham, sounds worht haveing a look at though.

Your fronts are adjustable in about 8-9 seconds. The rears are more painful to get to and normally do not need tightening anyhow as they would have tightened them 3/4 of the way anyhow. I have the adjusting knob so I can rip into it for you before we take off. It will give you a MUCH better feeling running them stiff in the front around the twists. The adjustability is quite astounding. I run the fronts and rears as stiff as possible the whole time.

Yeah, apparently they did build them in 95. Here is an example of a yellow one for sale in Hong Kong.
Just scroll down to it.

Was there an internal designation number for these 993 drop-top turbos? Does anyone have any pictures of them? I have heard of them, possibly in another post on here.

By the way, WydRyd, excellent description of chassis flex. I finally understand it......

That seems like a pretty unremarkable car, save for the rarity. Porsche seems to have a history of using up leftover parts in the first several months of proiduction on the next line, usually making something cool in the process -- turbo-look Carreras, Scs, and this turbo cab. It's pretty cool that they are that efficient, and that they let the engineers build something fun with the leftovers.

Someone was pretty bored brining up a topic from A YEAR AGO.

Seems I suffer the same attention deficit as the rest of you. After re-reading the opening post it appears I ignored the words "single turbo" and "964" (which should read 965).

So - this car wouldn't have the 400hp of the 993tt.

It also may not be AWD as is the 993tt. Much different than RWD. How many AWD cabs are out there? I'd say very few. They would have to be beefed up in the chassis department to use the turbo power on all four corners.

I test drove the yellow one on the carrera cars website. It was fun, but I couldn't get comfortable with the entire package. Despite being done at Porsche, it seemed like a problem waiting to happen. Plus, the original color was guards red.

I still like the idea of a turbo cabriolet though . . .
