Fair Prices for Engine and Transmission

I'm new to the Porsche world having bought a European 1982 SC about 2 weeks ago. The car has 160,000 miles and runs/drives fairly well--although I bought it with intentions of replacing the drivetrain. The engine runs strong but at a minimum has worn valve guides. The transmission seems to work fine from what I've read. I'm used to a Tremec T56 and the 915 takes some getting used to (I think I see a G-50 in my future). I have no history for this car. The only thing that's obviously been done to the engine is the addition of a Fabspeed dual outlet exhaust system. Given that, what would be fair asking prices for the engine (from air cleaner to exhaust tips) and the transmission?

Oh, if there's a better place to ask this question, please direct me there. Thanks.

Engine:
Unknown history, no leak down numbers, needs valve guides and full rebuild in known oil consumption rate.
Sell as a complete core.
Transmission:
Same deal, same pricing. As it is an unknown.
Search the classifieds for current pricing on similar mileage and condition engines and trannies.
My guess is 3k for engine and 1k for transmission if you can find a buyer and are honest about what you have.

If you get the valve job and other repairs done, you could eke out a better amount for the engine and the transmission. There are many auto enthusiasts which seek such rarities and keep looking for them on the internet. You could take various sites like car parts and accessories for a comparison with the used parts prices. They should certainly be of help to you.

You can try the question here also. Porsche Marketplace Discussion - Pelican Parts Technical BBS
Or search the Parts Classified to see what others are asking. Porsche 911 Used Parts For Sale & Wanted - Pelican Parts Technical BBS
I would say timmy2's prices are fair.

G50 will not fit in an '82 chassis without cutting torsion bar tubes. So unless you are going to do rear coilovers, well its gonna be really expensive. Fabricating new inner torsion bar mounts, only a small handful of people here have ever attempted it. Some one sells a G50 short bellhousing, but I've heard horror stories about that fit also.

Don't forget converting to hydraulic clutch system.

Just rebuild the 915 and get some type of shift kit (Wevo, Seine, ect...)

Alternatively, one could put them back in their matching tub.

The net cost of replacing your existing unit may be increased on the back end through a lesser resale value.

What I was going to say. It is what it is, unless you've got a bottomless wallet....

Or just sell your whole car and get a sorted out Carrera. Whatever the price difference, it will be a fraction of what a G50 conversion would be.

If everything is "fairly well" or "seems to work fine", I would just enjoy it as is until something blows

I bought my '72 T back in '98 with about 100K on it. I thought it would probably need a rebuild fairly soon. I also wanted more power by the end of my second day of ownership. I figured I'd drive it until it needed some sort of major engine work, then I'd either replace/rebuild with what I really wanted back there. After 14 years, it was still going strong with a little more smoke, few drops more oil on the ground. I finally pulled the trigger on a 3.2 last Fall. That 2.4 motor probably would've kept going for at least another 5-6 years. I just couldn't wait any longer!

The moral of the story is, you may actually be able to extract a lot more life from that 3.0 motor than what you think. A little smoke and a few drops of oil here and there does not necessarily mean the end is near. Just food for thought.

Roger
