Hood mounted spot lights...why is this?

Need some better night lights on the old 3.2, and I don't dare start unclipping the wire springs that hold the existing headlights in place for fear of not getting them back where they are supposed to go.

Just about all the searches on here show spotties mounted on the hood/bonnet, this seems like the worst place for them, with all the opening and shutting knocking the lights around and dramas keeping them lined up, but that's the way it seems to be, maybe a longhood thing?

Anyway, how do driving lights go on the bumper? and anyone have pics of lights mounted there to see what they look like, any good reason not to put them there?

Thanks

The older 911 had cibie lights mounted to the horn grilles. You could go that route. Of course an upgrade to h4 lights is an option if you dont have them already. If worried about the springs just make sure you have beer handy... if they give you trouble crack one open.

Hood mounted spot lights...why is this? The additional lights give more light illumination of the road. The additional lights are very popular in Europe because often you drive narrow dark country roads with little traffic. Then you need your high beams to reach as far as possible and another wide light beam to illuminate the street right and left at closer range in front of you. The two hood lights do that. One is typically a long range driving light, that goes farther then the regular high beams, and the other light is a wide beam one that lights up the road in front of you on both sides. Those two lights should be mounted high for bet effect and that is why best they sit on top of the hood. Rallye drivers want two of each lights for even better light and redundancy. Now those hood lights are not fog lights. Those need to be mounted as low as possible, under the bumper. Because there is usually less dense fog near the road surface, and there is less of a chance to blind you with scattering off the fog. And they don't have to be too powerful because in fog you don't want to drive fast anyway

Thanks for the replies and pics.

I run Hella flood and a 800m pencil on my Range Rover and find them very good on our dark roads, want to do the same on the 911.

The bit I don't quite understand is why just about every pic of a 911 shows the hood has been drilled and the lights attached, when just about every other veh has the lights on the bumper (or bull bar) etc, but they are usually front engined I suppose

Perhaps its so you can stick stuff in the storage area and not risk hitting the lights when you lift things over them?

I plan to put mine on the fender/bumper and see how that works out.

Cheers

Some good spotlight mounts on these old classics

Mounting the lights higher helps with illumination. (mounted high enough it helps with blinding other cars...)

Never lost a bulb on my hood mounted repro lights. The bulbs are really cheap and easy to get at. I fail to see what the issue is.
