i just installed the powerprom 911 racing chip for an 050 DME 2 days ago -

better idle, maybe "snappier", bought it on FRW's advice 'cuz i have no 02 nor CAT -

downside is that the mid-range timing curve is too aggressive for my use - lots of pinging on half-to-full throttle at low rpm (under 3000), when lugging or pulling uphill in 4th-5th

that's on 91 octane AKI USA gas - you may have higher octane available - like they say "it all depends on how you plan to use it" - if you are going racing & use track gas - go for it

my stock 082 DME pulls like a train under same conditions, & will pull uphill from 1500 rpm w/o a whimper in 5th,

my 050 dme performs same as the stock 082 after i replaced the powerprom with the stock chip

i decided to try the powerprom, thinking the dead 02 circuit might be a "constant full rich" problem (apparently an incorrect assumption on my part - Wilke says that the DMEs do not "go full rich" in the way that OBD cars do, so i was worrying about nothing important - C'est la Vie))

(i'd already resolved the potential vacuum leak issues and have none)

I have a question in to FRW as to whether retuning the FQS will resolve the pinging issue

stay tuned

fwiw - i swapped in a Innovative-autosports 911 racing chip ($49 on eBay) in another 082 DME - and the car runs fine on it - i'll report more after i get a few-hundred k's on it

No feedback on the 911 chip itself, but FR Wilk is pretty well-known in 944 circles. I used to pore over the DME info he had on his site. Guy knows exactly what he's doing, IMHO.

I did convert a 24-pin DME to fit his 28-pin "shudder fix" chip for a buddy with a series 1 944 who didn't know what end of a soldering iron gets hot; it did exactly what it said on the tin.

nothing wrong with my engine

- i have 4 good 3.2 dme's and have test driven all of them on the same hilly circuit with the same gas

- all drive perfectly, no pinging

as a test, as advised by Floyd via eMail, I pulled out the 911 racing powerprom & replaced it with the stock chip in that same dme - it drives perfectly on the same roadtest circuit

- the only chip that does not "work" for street driving in my '89 3.2 is the 911 racing powerprom

as a further comparison - i bought the $49 eBay Innovative-autosports chip - put it into a good 082 dme - and it works fine, with no excessive advance issues like i had with the powerprom - it pulls nicely from 1500 rpm in 5th on an uphill grade at full throttle without any pinging - (just like all 4 of my oem dme's will do) - at altitudes of 4000-5500' it exhibits a slight "tip-in" pinging in the 2200-2800 rpm range, but that goes away at higher altitudes (as one should expect given the lesser cyl fill density)

and here's the rest of the story - fuel consumption:

- results for over 1200km of combined urban, hill country & freeway driving - (same combo for each setup)

oem chip = 24 mpg over 800 km

powerprom 911 race chip = 18 mpg over 200 km

innovative chip = 24 mpg over 400 km

i will grant that Floyd's chips have a good reputation in the 944 crowd - that is why i bought it - but the one i got is not any good for street-touring use imho -
