Stalled on 405 Freeway-Vapor Lock? or other Fuel System Issue?
Hello Everyone! Long time in since my last post. Wanted to get some opinions and advice and hopefully learn something new!
I have a 1983 SC and it stalled on the freeway today on my way home from work. Engine just stopped and I coasted to the side of the freeway, tried to start again but just wouldn't turn over. After about 10 min of sitting there and making arrangements with AAA, surprisingly the car started and was able to finish the few minutes to make it home. AAA canceled. At home, I can start the car, but to me, it subtly idles just a teeny rough. At first, I thought my pop off valve may have leaked, but it was ok, when I checked it when on side of freeway. About 5 miles before this happened, I filled up the car with Chevron Premium Unleaded. Not sure if related. Also 405 in Long Beach and Orange County area wasn't hot. Vapor lock doesn't occur while driving, correct? My guess there may be something with fuel system (fuel pump, accumulator, check valve, relay) from what I have read on other threads? Can bad O2 sensor can do this? Thanks for everyone's help and input. Quincy

Did you pump your gas with the delivery truck filling up the gas station tanks?

Replace your fuel pump relay. Mine was failing and would shut off the fuel pump randomly. The car would start up like nothing happened after sitting for a while.

when it stalled and wold not start, i swapped out the relay next to it for a quick test and it started right up. That's how I figured it out...

You may just need to spread the pins on the relay with a razor blade so they grip better.
If the relay rattling loose is the cause. Or replace it. Carry a spare just in case! ![]()

first, when you say it would not turn over, i take it that means it would not start, but the starter engages and turns the engine over?
when it stops, you need to check for spark. the CD and coil are much more related to the engine cutting off and the magically starting back up. they get hot, stop working, then cool enough to restart. so check for spark, that cuts the troubleshooting in half. if you have spark, then check the fuse, then tend to have bad contacts. the relay, and fuel pump. you can run the pump by jumping pin 30 and 87a. or you can lift the sensor plate with the key on. you should hear the CIS "squeal"
