Anyone ever bought an aftermarket exhaust and NOT been happy with the sound?

Ok, I've read all the threads and listened to all of the sound clips (spent hours on the sound clip thread), but has anyone bought a muffler and not been happy with the sound. I am looking at the Bursch or the Fabspeed and think the sound clips sound pretty good. Has anyone based a purchase on these sound clips and found out after that the sound was considerably different than expected. I'd have a hard time spending $1000 on the Fabspeed only to find out I hate the sound when I put it on. Any comments appreciated. Thanks.

I have SSIs and Dansk 2 in 1 out and while it was a noticeable improvement in performance, there's a bit more of a "resonator" sound than I'd like. It has a nice throaty burble but the rasp at high RPM is louder than I like.

Nope happy with my M&K, but had the same concerns when buying it.
Now sure what your set up is or what your looking for as far as sound.
I have a M&K pre muffler to a stock muffler currently which is great (low tone at load, stock sounding at idle)but am considering a more free flow muffler (1 in 1 out) that might give me more rummble. Looking to avoid drone of 2 in 2 out or popping if possible.

Sound change is purely taste driven so very subjective and mostly driven by set up.

I had a M&K 2in 1 out on my '84 cabrio when I bought it (with SSIs), and the noise, while glorious, was simply too much. Set alarms on too much. Ringing ears too much. Don't know which specs it was built to.
A thing to keep in mind. That awesome sound may be tiring over longer trips, or attract unwanted attention.

It is all about the sound and weight difference. I'd like an M&K 2 in 1 out but I know I'd lose some mid range torque (I have SSI's and an OEM type Dansk on a 930-10).
Unless you have a modified motor pushing more gas/air/exhaust you will prob soften/raise your mid range rpm sweet spot.....for sound or a weight saving.
I'm all for the weight saving deal of about 10 lbs over stock but not for a torque/mid range loss.
All of the advertised HP gains are usually found at WOT only.

I have an M&K 1 in/out. Wish it was a touch louder.

But that's just me...

I've got the Fabspeed cat bypass + SuperCup dual resonator setup and I love it! The car sounds mean as hell! I've had this setup for a year or so now. I just had my shop weld in flanges so I can slap in a cat to pass emissions. Car passed with flying colors, and now the bypass is bolted back in.

Hyd,

Are you running a cat with this set up?
Are you experiencing any mid range power loss?
Sound clip?

You can ask, but everyone's sound perception is personal and subjective. Best case is to find an owner with the same exhaust system, then ask for a listen.

You could also search the archives for threads on reducing muffler drone or dB levels, but those too are subjective opinions. Your threshold for "loud" might be higher or lower than the poster.

I built my own for $200 and the only thing I'm unhappy about is setting my crotch on fire doing my first welding.

I'm using a Bursch pipe with this..no cat. I'm JW chipped also.

No mid range loss that I can detect...car runs robustly.

It's really an impossible question to answer. I've heard some that made nails on a chalk board sound good but yet the owner liked it.
The only qualifier that no-one likes is drone. The dual out mufflers have this tendancy on some engines. I have found the Carreras and 964/993 to be the most prone. There are ways to kill drone without hurting power but they need to be addressed on an individual level depending on the engine, headers, and muffler used.

yes impossilbe to answer. I have a Bursch on my 1973 2.7 MFI and love it. Has been on there for 10 plus years.

I feel Bursch makes great exhausts and are a great value.

B&B. Way loud. Agree it is a matter of individual choice. I now have M&K pre muffler and M&K 1in/1out muffler and for me it is just right. Love it.

+1
I had a 2in-2out Dansk coming off SSI and hated it because of the drone. The sound was good above 3k though. I sold it and bought a cheap used Bursch here 2in-1 out and love it. It is civil when you need it to be but has a raspy bark when you jump on it..

regards,
