This has been written about MANY times on this forum.

There's even a how-to in the tech articles section, IIRC.

Drew,

You need to pull of the horn pad and get a 1 1/16 short socket with a 8 inch 1/2 drive extension. If it has never been removed it might be a little tough to pull off but with a bit of patience and some grunt it will come off.I have a 930 steering wheel that i've renoved a few dozen times already so it takes like 30 seconds to remove and the same to reinstall ...

When you do reinstall it,stuff some paper towel in the socket so the nut sits flush with the end of the socket then slide the washer in place with an extendable magnet, hold it in place with a long screwdriver then pull the magnet off and reinstall the nut !

There you go,30 seconds or less

Cheers !
Phil

When you are removing the wheel be careful, it can come off quickly and it's possible to hit yourself in the face. This has not happened to me but I got the warning from someone who bloodied themselves and their story got my attention.

Leave the nut on the last three or four threads after you crack it. then pull until wheel lets loose, remove nut, wheel slides off.
This is how to avoid a bruised face!

Do as Timmy says and alternate pulling the wheel from the 3:00 and 9:00 position back and forth until it pops off.

And if it is stuck real good have a 2nd person tap steering shaft using a hammer and extension while your are pulling and nut is 3 or 4 threads from end.

This.

I like the loctite freezenspray stuff too, you cant really heat things up in there to help work it loose and Kroil/PB Blaster stinks for a long time after.

use a club type device to hold the wheel and DO NOT USE THE STEERING WHEEL LOCK TO HOLD .. you will jack up the lock ... search and you will find that also ...

the way i was taught when i worked on cars was to use one knee on one side of the steering wheel and then put a ball peen hammer under the other side with the head on the nut on the shaft and your leg inder the handle. pulling up with both legs whack the head of the hammer.
sterring wheel should pop right off.

+1

Reduces the chance you will dork up the steering wheel lock or other damage. If you don't have one, use the club method.

+ 2 on this. The nut came right off, then the wheel popped off my '74. Electric impact guns are cheap and often useful.

+3 on the electric impact gun. But be careful, hold it tight, it has a huge torque. Also works on the alternator pulley nut.

I'm going to do this exercise today. 1 1/16" converts to about 25.5mm. Since I'm going to have to purchase a socket, I'd like to buy another in metric size to keep around. Has anyone confirmed a 27mm will work without being too loose? Assuming they make a 27mm.

Followup: 27mm is the correct metric size. I used an impact gun to remove the nut in a few seconds. Luckily the steering wheel slid off just as easy. However, I notice that the turn signal switch is loose and flopping around in the housing. I might as well fix that while everything is off; need to search for how to remove the housing.
