964RS guidance

Hi there, I'm new to this forum and need some guidance. i have recently been very lucky to buy a low mileage 964RS. i have just driven it 550 miles taking it home as i knew this would be a great way to get to know the car. The car had a service and an inspection prior to collection and nothing untoward was found. being a 21 year old car with low mileage (49000Km - 30000miles) it has not been used regularly over it's life so the long drive may have been a bit of a shock.

The car is great to drive, the engine is strong but i have two small niggles with it that i picked up on the journey. the first occurred after about an hour of driving when we hit some traffic and there was a bit of clutch work and warmer temperatures.

1. when cruising and giving very light throttle/load on the engine at around 3000rpm there there is a slight squeaking noise as you go on and off the throttle. I initially thought this may have been worn bearings on the alternator but after taking it out the next day when it was cold for a very short drive along the road with the fan belt removed i replicated the same noise. by the way the noise is almost imperceptible but after a 10 hour drive with no radio/limited sound deadening (lightweight RS) you pick these things up.

2. after an enthusiastic drive the next day i found that when in neutral in the driveway after being revved and dropping back to idle there is a noise that sounds if something is dragging/feeling dry with the engine/clutch.

My initial thoughts are around the following components. Clutch/release bearing, dual distributor/belt/bearing.

Any previous threads, links or guidance would be much appreciated!!

Pics or it didn't happen

Welcome!

Although this is the 911 technical forum, there is a 964 forum, if you don't get all the help you need here, try posting in that forum.

Good luck

Btw. All 1st intro posts from new members MUST include pics of their ride... Just sayin, plus a 964RS is a sweet ride so, double up on the pics

You lucky baaastaaad. Pictures or it didn't happen indeed, but if it were me in your enviable position, I'd spend the first week of ownership taking everything serviceable apart. Lubricating, tightening, inspecting, and generally putting everything as it should be and chances are that your squeaks may go away doing that.

I saw that section of the forum but thought that this issue may be applicable to others of the air cooled 911's as well. here's a pic of the new purchase and one of my older one

That squeaking could be the distributor. The cap might need to be taken of and a bit of lube applied. I had something similar and it turned out to be this. Heres a link

distributor lube...

The car should have its original one piece flywheel, instead of the serial production dual mass unit regular 964's have. As a result you might be hearing noises coming from the transmission at idle because of the gear lash moving back and forth on the shafts. This is completely normal.
That might answer symptom #2 for you

#1 might be a small vacuum leak somewhere in the intake system

Thanks for the tips, i'm aware of the chattering you get with the SMF and i'm pretty sure it isn't that. The dragging is as if a pump was running inefficiently, but being an RS, there are no auxilliary pump systems. That's why i thought it could be the distributor or belt to the slave.

I'm also an RS owner, and a shop owner in So. Cal. As for the squeak, sometimes the HVAC blower fans make a squeak when the speed is low OR off (when turned off they still turn at a low speed). Next time you hear the noise, turn the blower fan speed up and see if it goes away. Mine does this on the left side fan, there are two. Looking at the pics, do you have a rear spoiler delete? Can't see it in the photo.

Did the RS come with a roll bar? It's not obvious in your pic and I was under the impression that they came with one from the factory.

This is a euro spec 964 RS lightweight and is spec'd without a roll cage. The spoiler is the same for the majority of the RS light weights it is the same/similar to the electrical lifting one from the normal C2/4.

I will check the squeak vs' the rear blower, this did fuse on the way up the road so could be something to do with it.

i still don't like the dragging sensation coming from the engine/clutch interface in neutral, i am having a Porsche specialist come over to take a look and try to diagnose it but if anyone has any further pointers it would be appreciated!

For some more info here are the interior pics and a pic of the rear

As you are aware there are a number of different spec cars available, my one does come with a rear blower fan.

I think the vibration/dragging i'm getting is from the pilot bearing. Anyone changed this before without changing the flywheel?

I am ashamed that I didn't even know this car existed. Were any delivered in the retro RS paint scheme?

I don't believe it was so common to have the white and blue/red lettering. There are a number of cars with the bright colours, rubystone red, mint green, maritime blue etc..

Pulled the engine to do som eservicing on the engine and got the gearbox off. As said earlier i'd anticipated the clutch and it was not looking good. Most lily the result of it not being used regularly so bought a full clutch kit including flywheel and a number of nut and bolts.

Time to get the engine all cleaned up and servicing done! Will tell you how it goes after all the bits have been changed. It's a good chance to get the engine a good seeing over!

You just not a lot lurker-er.

Saw my first one at Don McGill Porsche on I-10. Is it Momentum Porsche now?

I googled Porsche 964 RS and I see some have Carrera RS side graphics under the images tab.

Saw one this color at Stoddards in Ohio in the way back and my 4 year old daughter named it the "Slime Car"
