Question CHILD SEAT QUESTION - No, I'm not crazy

Hey everyone,

My little guy is 7 months old, which means he will need to go in a regular car seat as opposed to the infant seat. That also means that he'll be able to ride along with daddy with the top off soon. I have searched the archives here at Pelican, but my journey has been fruitless in gaining information.

I am looking for a child seat that will fit into the back seat. I'm not too comfortable with him in the front, and my wife won't be too comfortable in the back either. So, I'm looking for a child seat that will make everyone happy. It's time for my boy to learn what a P-car is. I don't plan on any major revving while the mini-me in there, so don't blow a gasket. Can't wait till he can just slide the belt on, will make things easier. ANY DIRECTION HERE???????

THANKS SO MUCH,

JON

First check your local stores for return policies. Then see if you can find one that has a base that can be removed for bucket seats - such as the Cosco Alpha Omega (same seat at the Eddie Bauer one). This feature usually isn't well-advertised. I have a cabriolet and had to remove one of the seat backs to make the Alpha Omega fit best, but perhaps the back seat is a bit roomier in a Targa and this won't be necessary.

I thought the back seat was a child seat.

Hey Island,

Thanks for the link. I've seen that before, but I'm lead to believe that the child seat on sale here is for later model porsches, like the 993. The later models have "anchor" systems that the 911's of the 80's do not. Is this true? I'll have to give them a call tomorrow.

I don't know about the anchor system. But a year ago I saw a late 80's Carerra Cab. with two toddler seats installed in the back. It caught my eye as an indication this guy/gal has his/her priorities right.
This link shows has a bit of info;

HI

I had the same question about a year ago, and got help from a bloke in Scotland. He was using a seat from Britax in his 924S and Carerra 3.2. I have a seat from Britax caled "Freeway" (about $150) It fits nice in the bucket seats of my 924. It should fit my 911 too. I dont know if you can get Britax in your part of the world but they are the best i could find. Hope this helps.

Check over on RENNLIST. There was a pretty complete thread on this back in the spring - around May. It is probably on the old 911 board.

I bought a shoulder belt for the backseat from PEP - found them in Pannorama. Then found a car seat with a small base and it worked well.

Be like me and throw the kid in the front! On sunny days the 2 year old rides with me shotgun. True my wife hates me, I get nervous around police, and I am the bane of minivan mom's all over the road (seriously, you should see the looks I get) but daughter and I have a ball high fiving and so forth. Where did the kid ride when it was a new car 32 years ago? No airbag either!

I recently purchased a used Porsche Prince car seat from ebay for < $100.00. This is specifically designed for the rear seat. These are ~ $240.00 new. I believe they are now called the Porsche Convertable, but are made by Britax.

cheers

I just bought a Century Breverra Classic Premiere from Toys are Us for my 2 year old. They are forward facing and are rated with a 5-point harness for 20-40 lbs and up to eighty with a lap and sholder belt. I have a 1990 C2 targa with dual airbags so the front seat was not an option. I took back seat measurements and scoured all the baby stores before I found this one. It fits the best in the rear seat - cost was $45.00, Good luck!

Good & important thread. My twins used to ride in Evenflo seats where there is a stable base "permanently" installed in the backseats with a base, using the lap belts, and the seat "clicks" into place. (Alot like Bruno's pic).

We had our local public safety institute employees/fireman inspect them for correct installation (I'm at a college/university, they are around the corner from my dept.).

Now they (age 4) are in Costco booster seats which also utilize the rear lap belts, that have a racing interior belt configuration, again checked out with flying colors.

Baby Katy, 4 weeks old, uses a new model of the Evenflo w/ a base in the passenger seat (with retro AMCO NOS roof rack olding the stroller) but of course no airbag.

If you've ever seen a small child that has been in an accident while in the front seat, secured by only the stock belts, you'll never place them at risk again. Cars are replaceable.

Hey fellas,

Tnanks so much for the input. And the search begins. It seems that there are several models that are appropriate for the rear seat of my "baby" that will be great for my baby. Any additional input will be greatly appreciated.

thanks again BBS
