What is a good manual 911 - New owner
What is a good general tech manual or book for an 87 Targa 911? Just got it and want to try my hand at maintaining one of these beauties.

The Bentley Manual is very extensive but also pricey. Haynes is borderline useless for your car (and my 88)
Waynes book is VERY good on detail and how exactly to do repairs. The photos are beyond any car repair book I've ever owned. I'd say it's best to have both, considering they will pay for themselves several times over. I actually read Waynes book on projects I don't ever intend to do, it's just good reading. Later

Since you are probably going to start with basic maintenance, I would get Wayne's 101 Projects for your Porsche and (please don't flame me) the Haynes manual. The Haynes manual is very basic, but it still has some decent information at a cheap price. The two together will help you get through most projects in the beginning.
And before any project, search the archives here will be a great help. Lot's of people have posted great details of here.

The Bentley manual will be specific to your car, and will give the details that you need to complete your work. It's not perfect, but it is far cheaper than factory manuals.
Wayne's books is great for understanding the complexity, scope, and difficulties of certain tasks, but it isn't model specific. Unless they've updated the Haynes manual, you won't find very much usefull in there on your year car.

1. The ability to figure out, and use, the search function on this board. 2. The ability to post a question to the board. Looks as though you have #2 taken care of. Planter --ROFL ![]()

Bentley's, 101 Projects, and the Porsche factory Parts and Technical Reference Manual. The last one is not the repair manual, which is huge. It is maybe a half-inch thick and has exploded views, parts listings, and a few tech tips. If Pelican doesn't have it it's cheap from a dealer.
