Tire Sizes - 225/50 & 255/50 (16)

Hey Guys,

I need a new set of tires. I recently became the owner of an '86 911 SC. Mechanically it is factory except a set of BBS Wheels. Cosmetically it is a TurboLook SlantNose conversion.

Current set of Yokohama's on it are about 20 years old and the car has been stored for many years. The car used to belong to my father - since I have known the car (about 25 years) it has only seen about 3k miles. Total 15k on the clock. Time to get it back on the road with some fresh rubber.

Currently running 225/50 VR16 & 255/50 VR16. I would like to stick to the same size. (Trying to keep that 80's fat tire look alive)

The only tire I have found in that combo is the BFGoodrich g-Force Sport Comp-2. Reviews seem alright...anyone with experience on these?

Any other recommendations? Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

curious about tires too. Can you tell me what size the wheels are? Are the 7 & 8 x 16 or larger?

255/50 16s seem way too tall. With 8 or 9 inch wheels most would run 245/45 16s on the rear.
Post some pictures and wheel widths if you can.

I did that for years, then just about everyone stopped making 245/45-16 tires.

Tirerack shows 13 available tires, 12 of which are track tires.

I went back to the stock sizes, 205-55 and 225-50.

I have a set of comp 2 BFGs that I have been using for a couple of months, street driving daily driver. They seem pretty sticky once warmed up it takes a couple miles in the morning before they smooth out. I have to push it pretty hard to hear them chirp like happy puppy dogs.

Hopefully you can shed some light on this.

I do not know the exact width of the wheel. The car is currently stored at my fathers house - I will have to run over there this week to measure them out. I am a rookie to wheel/tire sizes...Does anyone know if there is a marker or stamp on BBS wheels identifying the exact size?

The tires are pretty tall...I have to admit. I like how these tires fit in the wheelwells. SHould I go a size down in sidewall for more options?

The BFG Sport Comp 2's don't seem too shabby.

Here are a few pictures of the wheels/tires/fitment. (Please ignore the allignment on the first one. This one was taken when I was a bit younger...trying to be 'artistic')

Thanks guys for your help!

Hey Emcon, when you went back to the 225-50, are you mounting it on a 7,8, or 9 inch rim. Ive got a 225/50 on an 8 inch rear, but that seems like a stretch for a 9 inch. Does that even work?
Thanks,
Ron

I was also looking at those BG g-sport force 2 tires and wondering how they did, but perhaps in the 245-50-16 size on 9 inch rims. Does anybody have any experience/mounted pics of these? I was hoping the 245-50-16 wouldn't be too much of a jump from 245-45-16. It would get my speedo working better at least!

I plan on going to 245/50/16s soon as my 245/45/16s go bald and will not even let it bother me.

Still too early, but the choices are out there.

These look interesting:

Yeah. Any recommendation on a tire you believe would be a good swap?

Had the same dilemma with my 83 SC.
Finally found 245/45/16 tires at Firestone of all places.
PRIMEWELL PZ900, I never heard of them either...........
Did my research and purchased a set 20K ago. Quite/smooth/holds the road wet/dry and in the curve to work. Nice tire.

Not sure what you have. An '86? Or an SC? One or the other, not both...

A 255/50is too tall. I'd suggest a 225/50 for the front and a 245/45 for the rear. In these sizes, I'd suggest a Bridgestone RE-11.

Nice looking ride. Although if it's an '86 it would be a Carrera, not an SC

Cheers
