Redbook says it is a US 911 Coupe chassis serial#'s 11830001 through 11830473.
The "S" serial numbers for 67-68 are 1180001 through 11801267

That is a US Coupe, as pointed out by helmethead. The 911S was not imported into the US that year, making parts difficult to get for one (I know... boy do I know...). Now the nice thing about what you have is the ones imported had all S trim and features except the engine, which is a little peaky on the cams.

As pointed out, you have a 68 normal. However, someone put on later, 69+ quarter panels and front fender flairs. 68 was a short wheel base car, 69 and later long wheel base. Look at the first pic and notice the rear wheel is not centered in the wheel well. In fact, it is forward toward the door. The quarter panel on the car is for a long wheel base vehicle which would have the longer trailing arms/spring plates, and the wheel would be further rearward.
Check and report the engine numbers as that is the real money issue in this case. Given what you've posted, however, I doubt the engine is an S.

Info on that tag.
Hi Porchick,
Welcome to the group. Thanks for posting. If this car had been a "S" model it would have been stamped "911S" in the first box. Ya we have all read the stamped ID tag and wondered what is that "911 ~~ S 66" in that second box. It turns out to be the "Heizeinrichtung Typ" it's a certification for a type or function of the heater in Germany. 66 was the first year it met the requirements and those same numbers appear unchanged up thru the 1973 cars. That "S" sure gets us thinking the first time we read it. |

Thank you for the information, everyone has been quite helpful. Do you have any idea why the Dr. Ing H.C F Porsche K.G plaque is on the dash? I have not seen that on any other dash?

That little plaque was affixed to every '68 911 and 912s destined for US delivery, indicating the car complied with the newly introduced US emissions regulations. Even without the chassis number, its an instant giveaway that this car was not an S, since the S was not imported to the US in '68. It was the first smog label on a Porsche. Just as with the smog pumps on the '68 US motors, most of those little plagues disappeared over the years.
I'm guessing the story those flares have to tell is of grandiose dreams. "Hey Billy Bob, lets flare this puppy and we'll have us a Porch Turbo!" Looks like the dream went unrealized. Enthusiasm probably evaporated about the time they figured out how much it was going to cost for the rims and tires cost to fill those massive fenders! |

Billy bob didn't know about the wheelbase change when he welded those flares on...the flares are installed in the LWB position on a SWB car. Like most people he took the wheels off when doing the job...then once he put the Chevy donut rims back on..."Aw sheeooooot!!!" Then, "Lets just push er into the weeds behind the shop an make room fer the Nova. Im sure that 99 cent store tarp will keep the water out."
At least they didn't chop the nose off and do the full slant nose big bumper turbo kit. Too bad they left the car out in the weather...judging by the nice seats it looks like it was recently in really nice shape. Is the floorpan rust as bad as it looks? The car could likely be saved if someone were handy with a welder. Welcome and good luck! Last edited by jkarolyi; 09-26-2013 at 08:53 AM.. |
