Turbo Swap: 2 steps farward 1 step back

Weekend update dididididiiddididididi (teletype noise)

Yes I'm loosing it.

I had very little time to work on the car this weekend. Attemped to set the timing again. I bumped the pulley around to paint the timing marks. THIS PULLY HAS NO DOUBLE MARK AT TDC. That is what has been screwing me up. My manual shows pulley pix from USA, California, Japan, and ROW. ALL have a double mark for TDC and + or - 5 deg. Where did this oddball come from?
So anyway I maked it and fired her up (on the first hit). After the idle came down the mark was at 20+ ATDC! Something goofy going on. The engine now sounds ragged at idle. Full movement of the dizzy would not bring it back to TDC.

So I gave up but decided to at least drive the car around the block to see how the motor fealt under load. Idle was ragged, weak on power, coasted to a stop sign and NO BRAKES!! Pulled the handy dany e-brake before hitting a car going through the stop.

One of you suggested I check the brake boost vac line on my last post. Looks like you get the boobie prize! I was out of time to go further so I put back in the garage. Next chance I get the intercooler comes off AGAIN and I fish for this rotten brake vac line that oh so conveeeenienty runs under the CIS quagmire. A leak like this would explain the timing problem, the high idle, and the lean mixture. I'm ready to put the vice grips to my mechanics nuts about now.

Any helpful hints on how to get to the vac port for the brake line?

Thanks.

I assume you had power brakes before? Use the same line and tee it to the vacume manifold. I ripped my decel valve out and used one of those ports. If you need a plastic tee I have a boat load because I had to meet a min order. I could send you one. I am not sure but you might need a check valve in the line. I am not running one but maybe I should be.

Thank you!

I put up a new topic on the one-way valve and why it is needed.
Yes I will re-rout the brake booser line if need be. There are plenty of left over vac ports now that the smog crap is gone.

'Course I won't know if this is really the problem or if it is the FINAL vac leak until I tear into it. Seems logical but I thought everything was good to go last weekend.....................

How'd you get around not having a decel valve? Aftermarket?

Geez..for just a moment I thought you actually hit a car...no bull#### my mouth was wide open in fear for your baby.

Ok calm......c a l m........

I hope you can get things sorted out easily. When this sort of thing happens to me I just loose the plot and pay someone else millions to get me outa trouble. Of course we all know you'll have it running real soon, posting sound bytes and vids for us all to drool over.

Cheers

Ah geez, guess I could have worded that a little better.

No I didn't hit anyone, wasn't even close. I'm sure the other driver was completely unaware of the situation (accept for that look of horror on my face).

I have to get this ironed out myself. There isn't anyone to take my car to. The nearest p-shop is in Springfield or Chicago, both 120+ miles away. My old mechanic in Indy is moving and well, you know what happened with the mechanic that put the motor in the car. So you guys will be hearing even more griping and stupid turbo questions until this thing gets on the road. Did I mention that my wife has given me non stop hell sinse the car came back unfinished?

I first took the decel valve out of my SC and the idle returned to 900 rpm like it should on a old carbed car. So I did it to the turbo also. I think the decel valve is there for emissions. Just like the vacume retard is also for emissons.

From what I've heard, with the engine off you should be able to pump the brakes to rock solid and the pedal should hold pressure. f it sinks-that indicates internal leak in Master cylinder(unless resevoir drops).
Keep holding the pedal down and start the engine to check the brake booster. The pedal should drop and get semi-spongy.

Ya might want to get some clamping pliers and clamp off the booster hose to isolated it, or disconnect and pump up with a mighty-vac to double check the diaphram before replacing.

Rarly, When I made my 3.0 transplant (yeah different beast but..), I had timing that was way off like you have, even though things were lined up like all the books say they should. I rotated the dist one notch to get the timing closer to what it should be and set my timing. It worked. I can't tell you why that is, but the important thing is that the dist provides spark when it should. I now have a vacuum advance probelm, but I don't think it is related, need a new vacuum unit. Anyways I found out that until I got the timing right it was pointless to do much on the motor. Gleaned knowledge leads me to think that the decel valve is for emissions, but I haven't done research into it specifically. Poll the Rennlisters, there are a couple of great knowledgeable guys that could probably tell you in a heart beat.

I here you about the wife being pissed. I worked on my transplant for over 9 months. Late into the night for the first several weeks, then the apron went off and it was prime time at the house. "I never thought I would be jealous of a car," was the switch to the light over my head to give her more time...Damn women, don't they know better!

I'm in the SW Suburbs of Chicago, but I'm going camping with the family this weekend, but let my know if you want a hand the weekend after. It'll be a good road trip through the corn fields to come give you a hand, and we can visit my old drinking holes at U of I. Contact me via e-mail.

I looked into removing the decel valve when I was stripping all the useless junk off the CIS. It was a questionmark. The Bosche book stated it was needed to smooth the engine during the off throttle events. This book covers all CIS systems in many types of cars so the information may not apply to our situation. It obviously works for you. I will strip more off later when she's running right.

The brakes do pump up and hold like you said. I wasn't expecting that to happen when I first tried to stop and acted out of instict grabbing the handbrake.

I don't think the timing is a tooth off. Right now I'm leaning tward a brake vacuum leak being the cause of all these problems. I hope to find out on Tuesday evening. This comming weekend I have to passify the wife and take her to ChamBanna for a couple of nights so no work on the car. Thanks for the offer, my schedule is sooooo screwed up that I can't make plans with anyone to help me out. My work has me either on site or on call 24/7. It's not unusual to get calls in the middle of the night. Maybe we can get together at some sort of P-event once this headache is over and have some fun with our cars!

Here is a pic of where I am now:
