Drove 2 Turbo 996s today--I want one!!

Say what you will about the watercooled 911s, they are very fast.

Met up with some buddies today to drive some roads. 1 has a totally stock 2004 Turbo. The other has a modded 01 Turbo. Upgraded turbos, exhaust, and an ECM tune.

I had the opportunity to drive them back to back, not on a track but on some generally lightly travelled roads.

I love my ol'SC but I think my next toy car is going to be a Turbo from 2000s.

If you haven't driven one, do it but be warned....the boost is addictive.

I have not driven one yet, but I keep looking at them in the classifieds and at local independent dealers. Considering that a good one can be had for around $40K, I think that is tremendous value for a supercar like that. Also, no worries about the issues that the regular M96 engines often have.

I also like the fact that they can be good daily drivers and have AWD which helps in the rain (i.e. 10 months of the year in Vancouver, BC).

I might be the odd one in reality (not on here amongst other air heads) but I still love tracking my little cars. That being said.....I crossed over to dark side this summer and picked up a GT2. Wow, its fast, comfortable (JRZ, Eibachs, etc with cage), smooth and YES quite quick. They aren't longhoods but that isn't all bad. They certainly aren't Toyo's either

The only thing I would recommend is to not sale your air cooled unless its a must. They don't sound, smell or feel at all the same. But the only ones that would short you for picking one up hasn't driven a TT or GTx yet.

I would love to get a 996TT but I would never sell the '87 C3.2 to buy one. GT2........maybe.

I'm sort of in the same quandry. My turbo just sits because it is a garage queen. I even keep it at another house to prevent me from driving it. That and my house is on the water so salt air is really bad for the car.

Now, I want another fun car that I can just drive for *****s and giggles. I really want a Ferrari, but maintenance is nuts on those cars. I'm looking at a 996 turbo or possibly an 09+ Cayman. The 996 turbo I looked at had 19k and was gorgeous, BUT there was a leak from the cylinder head. My mechanic showed it to me and said it looked like a bad casting. Apparently, this is not uncommon to the 996 turbo and has been repaired under the factory warranty period. However, out of warranty is quite costly since a new head is something like $5k.

A Cayman is not a Carrera, but I think it is more fun to drive. It is more nimble, smaller and tossable. It just seems noisier in the cabin than the Carrera. (I've only driven the 986.1 Caymans). Too bad the Cayman doesn't have rear seats.

I thought about one but I just cant get past the fried egg headlights.

Besides, once you drive a 76 2200 lb turbo 3.2, a 996 turbo would just be a watered down version of what I already have. Agreed on the GT2 though.

I drove a 997 Tip turbo and thought it wasn't that fast. I drove my E55 to the dealer so I would have something to compare it to. lol The 997 turbo just wasn't engaging to me like my 86 3.4 turbo. Unfortunately, I sold the 86 to a friend as I didn't drive her. So, I bought another friend's 77 3.2 turbo. Not as fast as my 86, but she is a handful to control! The 996 turbo or a Cayman would be a great daily, just not as engaging. It would complement the 930 nicely.
