VIN Problem
I bought a 1986 911 from out of state, I live in CA. At the DMV
when my wife was having the VIN verified for Ca reg. the person looking at the vehicle could not find the stamped VIN on the vehicle. The person found the lable on the door jamb, but missed the one in the front window. Both VINs match the out of state Title and have not been altered. On the phone I told my wife to have him look in the front compartment for the VIN. The person at the DMV looks at the VIN to find it is different from the sticker on the door jamb, they refered me to CHP. The digits 4 to 6 and 9 under the hood are z's. On the sticker and the window the numbers 4 to 6 is EBO which stands for VDS codesfor USA. Digit 9 is a 5 witch is a test digit. Is this normal for USA vehicles or is this a Grey Market Vehicle? The VIN number in the trunk of my US '86 has ZZZ's but is otherwise identical to my VIN. This gave me a heart attack the when I first discovered it (oh no! my car is made from two!) but it appears normal.
