Update on timing

I just wanted to update anyone interested on a timing issue that I posted about the other day. I couldn't get the timing to tdc or after, as it is supposed to be. I had the distributor turned as far as it could go in one direction. I went to another p-car enthusiasts house last night and we got it sorted out. We took the distributor out and quickly learned that the vacuum advance was not working. The diaphragm seemed fine, but it was not altering the timing. A little lubrication and maneuvering and we finally freed it! It went back in w/o incident and we adjusted the timing to 5 degrees atdc at idle and 29 degrees btdc at 4000 RPMs.

I was hoping this would help with the hot running condition, but it did not. He thought my belt had seen better days so we hopped in his 80 ROW SC and off to the store we went. I drove it back and was impressed. He has SSIs with a dual in single out muffler. It had a nice snarl. The new belt went on fine, although I was surprised that there were only 3 shims total on the shaft!
