Which swivel sockets fit heat exchangers? Sunex 3/8" dr DON'T
I've read Snap-On's chrome 3/8" drive swivel fits, but it is rather expensive and in all my years of wrenching I haven't had any other absolute need for swivel sockets. I bought these which seemed like a fair price and impact rated to boot, but the 13mm does not clear the head exchangers. Which is too bad because they look like they're nicely made. Can someone tell me what worked for them ? (link appreciated if you have it). Thanks

I think I'm now realizing that impact swivels have a lower radius of swiveling as it were, whereas the non-impacts can go a full 90 degrees.

Rus,
I too have the Craftsman std. 3/8" drive universals with permanent/built-in sockets. Not the impact style. Just the plain Jane chrome 3/8" drive style. The 13mm works great on the heat exchanger nuts. BTW for the barrel nuts, no need to buy a special tool. Make your own. Use a 3/8" drive 8mm size socket and cut the bend off of a long 8mm hex key. Voila' there's your "custom" heat exchanger barrel nut removal tool.

Thanks Kevin.
I actually found that my standard 3/8" drive craftsman hex key sockets on an extension fit through the holes in the heat exchangers!

Uh, just need 1 or 2 wrench types for the HE hex nuts, but if you can use (or afford) the other 10 sockets or wrenches in a set too, that's fine.
These work: A properly bent 13mm distributor wrench (example): ![]() Short square drive adapter with hex for wrench: ![]() Related thread: Am I Asking For Trouble \ Playing With Fire Trying To Remove The Exhaust Studs? Sherwood |

Got 8 of them off. The barrel nuts come off easy - just used a good quality allen key with a breaker bar. PB and MAPP before hand. I could get to two of the 13mm's with a standard box wrench. Both came out easily, but with their stud. One Barrel brought a stud out.
Got these coming tomorrow, hope they do the trick. Astro Pneumatic 7412 1/4-Inch Drive Flex Socket Set, 6 Point - Metric, 12-Piece - Amazon.com
