My SWB Slant Nose Project
So, where do I start on this one...
Well, as I posted in my Boxster Racing Car Project thread, I did a stupid thing this season - I raced a friends car as my Boxster had a damaged transmission, and crashed his car! http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1377497712.jpg Cutting a long story short, Toni and I had several discussions about how to best manage this all, and the end result was for me to purchase the car from him. And that is what I did. Last Friday I drove up to Tampere to collect the car from Toni and bring it back home to start the work on it alongside the work I need to do to the Boxster to get it ready for next season. To make things more interesting, when I got there Toni informed me that he had lost the key to the car, and that it was locked and with the steering lock on! It took 4 of us to get the car onto the trailer without the key, but we did it... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1381144327.jpg This car has got an interesting history which makes it quite cool, and is quite special here in Finland as it has been road approved with the headlight in the front bumper - and comes with full road registration papers! I am still trying to get the full history from Toni, but the car was built for one fo the professional drivers here in Finland some time back and is based on a 1966 912 car. But the only thing that remains 912 on this car is the VIN. It has a nice high-reving 2.7 engine, a 911 915 transmission and even the full number of 911 dials, and not the normal 3 that you find in the 912. Today I manage to get the car off the trailer and into the garage (with the steering lock still on), and onto my lift. And did a first quick assessment of the damage. Apart from the obvious body work, the mechanical damage is isolated to a bent banana arm. This car will be and is for sale. I have already ordered the replacement banana arm, and will install that and make sure that mechanically the car is as it was before the crash - after that the car can be yours for €15000, with the body damage. After this I will start to fix the body work and will increase the price accordingly. I will post the details on the work here and also on the CCR Motorsports Engineering Facebook page. Here is some more pictures from today... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1381145101.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1381145177.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1381145261.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1381145323.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1381145381.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1381145439.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1381145502.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1381145616.jpg |
Time for a quick update after doing some work on the car last night...
I have got most of the stuff removed so that I can drop the bent banana arm from the car and prep to get the replacement one in. It is always interesting to work on a car where someone else has done all the modifications before you, always some head scratching points where you wonder "why was it done like this and not like that" :) The only parts that is outstanding to be able to get the damaged arm out now is one bolt on the outer CV joint which does not want to play nice, and the bolt holding the banana arm to the torsion tube is installed from the transmission side and not from the outside (as I would have done it), so the transmission is in the way :( But I have a solution for this ;) Here is a picture from how things looked when I packed up the tools last night and cleaned up ready for bed... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1381303065.jpg One more evening and I think I will have the arm removed. I also received the replacement arm in the post yesterday. It is clean, but I feel not clean enough, so I will blast it and put on some paint before installing it into the car. |

Please let me know if you find a link or more details... |
OK, thank you for the tip Magnus - you save me again ;) I found them from Wevo - Welcome to Windrush Evolutions - WEVO - Porsche Products
|
Nice! Glad I could help.
BTW, what type of engine does the car have? You say 2.7, CIS, carbs? Looks like a fun car to track if it got some kick in the engine. |
Quote:
The car is very light and with the 2.7 carb engine and changed gear ratios, it is great fun to drive. It is running in class 8C for Porsche Sports Cup. |
Just ordered the E-Z pins - now the project fun can continue :)
|
krog nice looking car good purchase.. is it a steel slant conversion or all glass? how much of body work is glass? overall weight without driver? how many hours on engine/trans? thanks frank
|
Quote:
It is not all steel slant. the front fenders and bumper is fiberglass and so is the rear bumper and rear engine lid/spoiler, but the rear fenders are steel. The overall weight I am not 100% sure about, but according to the 2013 season registrations it was registered by Toni in class 8c with 240Bhp and 960Kg (in our series the registered weight is with driver at the end of a race). The engine and trans were rebuilt end of last season, and the car has only been run in two events during the 2013 season. So hard to be exact but I would say under 100 Hours. If I had more space and did not already have my Boxster and 911SC, and if I had not taken out a loan to pay for the car, that I need to sell the car to pay off - I would consider having it myself and put a more correct 935 rear end on it... |
|
Got a bit more done last night on this project.
Attacked the last CV bolt which was stuck and managed to get it out. In the end I cut the head off the bolt. So now the only thing remaining is to remove the bolt holding the arm to the torsion tube. I will cut this one off as well, as I will be replacing it with the Wevo E-Z Pin. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1381376768.jpg I also cleaned up the replacement arm that I received earlier this week in my blasting cabinet. Will need some paint and then ready to be installed into the car... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1381376888.jpg |
Just a suggestion, why not remove the steering lock? The racing org I belong to requires that licensed race cars have no steering lock.
To "remove" mine, I took out the ignition lockset and ground down the stub/shaft that engages the slot in the steering shaft. Took only a few minutes on the bench grinder wheel. No more locking effect! Some would be upset with permanently altering the original lockset. Agreed if it's an older part. But my car is a '79 SC. Those ignition locksets can be found used for pennies on the dollar! |
Quote:
The club racing regulations permit the steering lock to be in the car if it is a road registered car used for club racing. The fact that this car is road registered is one thing that gives it value extra value, and I do not want to reduce this. But I wonder what it would cost to get a replacement lock set with key to fit the car - is the later car lock set the same as in the early cars like this one? |
Quote:
BTW, in the Swedish Porsche Sports Cup non-Porsche body work will be illegal next year, is it the same in Finland? |
Quote:
What do they mean with non-Porsche body work? So no modifications to the bodywork is permittee, or the parts must be from a Porsche production racing car? |
Quote:
I don't think the car must be in original appearance, 911 converted to a 993 will be ok. This is just second hand information I got from a friend who race PCSR 8C. Apparently there is pressure from Porsche AG about this. Then I guess we'll have to wait and see how strict it will be enforced next year. |
Interesting. I spoke to Johan von Berens this morning and he said "Car has to look like a Porsche. And that as an example, my modified Boxster is ok".

Had some more time in the garage, and now have the bent arm removed from the car and the replacement arm has been reconditioned and is looking like new...
Here is the replacement arm ready. I hope to be able to install it early next week, just need to deal with the bearings etc first. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1381600806.jpg Here is some pictures to show how the old arm is bent and compared to the new one. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1381600892.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1381600929.jpg Wonder if there is any value in the old bent arm, is it possible to bend them back? Just a reminder - this car is for sale ;) |
Car has now been advertised on Race cars Direct - racecarsdirect.com (Race Cars For Sale) » Porsche 912 based 911 RSR replica

Time for another update on this project than...
The replacement arm has now had the bearings installed and the bushing and is close to ready. I am missing some small parts that I hope to have arrive in the post soon, and then the new arm will be installed. Then the car will be put back on the ground for a first road test before I start on the body work and some other small things. Will be great to get the car back on the ground and give it a good drive up the road  Not sure how far I will go on working on this car, but as long as it is in my garage I will keep fixing and improving on things :) |
The pins from Wevo arrived today to be able to install the arm back into the car with the engine and transmission still installed. Will install the replacement arm in with these and keep the other one to give to the next owner for the future.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1382119986.jpg My good friend Heikki who owns and runs LTStudio, a great paint and body shop here in Finland who looks after my Boxster racing car when it comes to body repair and paint came round to look at the 911. We decided that he will take the car as soon as it is back on the ground and fix the body work for me - if the car has not been sold before that... So, once I have the replacement arm on and the mechanical stuff is confirmed to be good, the car will be relocated up to LTStudio to have the body damage sorted out :) |
Kroggers,
What type of rear calipers does that car use ? How are these mounted. Can you please show pictures of the rear brake assembly ? And the rear calipers and it´s adaptor. Thanks. |

Thanks for the picture.
I just wanted to know how the larger calipers were installed. If you have a chance to take a picture of the assembled arm with caliper and disk please post it. |
As this car is for sale and I have not yet received the last parts I need to put the replacement arm back in, I thought I would post some more general pictures of the car like the interior...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1382549188.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1382549219.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1382549249.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1382549280.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1382549317.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1382549355.jpg |
I have had some interest in the car, and a lot of questions. Figured I would put some more details here as well.
The car was converted to RSR look quite some time back when it was built as a road car for the then owner of Bella Boats here in Finland. At the time Bella were one of the main sponsors for Matti Alamäki, one of the leading rallycross drivers in Finland. This car was built as a copy of the car that Matti drove at the time. The front fenders, front bumper and rear bumper are fibreglass. The rear fender extensions and side skirts are steel. The car was converted into a racing car several years later after it was sold by Bella Boats. I would describe the car as in used racing car condition and not show car condition - there is some rust in places, but structurally the car looks to be sound. If you are looking to convert it back to original 1966 912 speck and look, then I would recommend that the car is striped and acid dipped. If you plan to use it as a racing car, then I think some general attention to some details will be nice - but the car does run and can be used to race as is (so it is race ready). Here are some pictures from under the car, which many have requested. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1382672744.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1382672781.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1382672825.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1382672852.jpg |
Another step closer to having the arm replaced. The bearing seals have arrived in the post, so now I can put the last bits onto the replacement arm and get it installed into the car.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1383029922.jpg With some luck I should have the car back on the ground and ready for a quick spin round the block by the end of the week - need to solve the problem of the missing key first maybe! And then the car will go off to my buddy Heikki to start getting the body work repaired. This is maybe a good time to remind that the car is for sale, and at the moment for €15000 ono (with the replacement arm installed). Once the car is delivered to Heikki to have the bodywork sorted out, then the price will go up to reflect the additional cost... |
Happy moment :)
The car is now back on all 4 wheels with the new arm installed. All that remains before the car goes to the body shop is to bleed the brakes and get the car started with the ignition switch removed... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1383223852.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1383223885.jpg The alignment on the wheel is a bit out, but that I can sort out after the body work has been done and as a last thing :) |
I do not have any new pictures, but I do have an update :)
Last night I made up a temporary ignition switch and started the car whilst it was still up on the lift. I wanted to confirm that the transmission was good, and it is :) Put the car in gear and she spun the wheels with no strange feeling or noise... Spoke to Heikki today and the car will go to his shop on Monday morning. |
Have you tried a locksmith? I had the same problem once before and I have a friend that is a talented locksmith. He polished a blank key and then turned it in the ignition switch over and over. Somehow he could figure out what to file to make a new key by hand. Worked out great for me.

For now, the switch I have put there will do... |
OK, a small update again :)
Good news, the missing key has been found and I should be getting it by the end of this week... The car has now been delivered to Heikki at LT-Studio, and they have started to fix the damage to the left rear. As such, I need to put the price up to cover this work. The car is now for sale at €18000 o.n.o. I will update with pictures when I get the from Heikki on the body work progress... |
Time for a little update....
First good news, the missing key has been found :) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1385025783.jpg Second good news, Heikki and his team over at LT-Studio (LT-Studio) have now fixed the crash damage to the rear fender and the small crack in the front fender - the car is looking as good as it did before the crash... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1385025911.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1385025938.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1385025968.jpg So, in theory, the car is now in the same state as it was before the accident. And nothing more for me to do but find the car a new home... |
Pulled the car out from the garage today and gave it a good clean to get some new pictures to put on the For Sale adverts. Looks nice and clean and ready for a new home...
