Car is interesting, but it has the wrong block and is no longer a numbers matching car. It also has the wrong spoiler. Most European "S" cars came through with H1's, but H4's are perfectly acceptable and the French cars had the yellow lenses. The seats are correct for the year in that they are sport seats. It should have an aluminum rear deck lid, but that would have to be confirmed.
Looks like a nice car, but I would check everything out if you were serious. It should also have a front oil cooler, but I couldn't make it out on my system one way or the other. VIN and original engine number would be a help even thoguh the wrong block is in it right now. Marc |

Jimbo, I agree with Marc completely...would also like to add that back then the French lites had yellow LENSES, not "yellow bulbs" as in the ad. But heck, most everybody knows that the "ultimate" early 911S was a 2.4 liter model...not a 2.2.

Looks nice. A few more minor items: black horn grills, wrong side mirror (should be round Durant), wrong radio. Also the statement, "Odometer shows 76,xxx kilometers" is not exactly a confidence builder. Must be questionable due to either condition or lack of documentation prior to 1984 or both????? Ad appears to indicate original paint but not clearly spelled out????
Should be interesting to see the reserve. Big dollar collectors will be scared away by the motor change. But could be a great car in the $20-25k range! -- Curt |

71 S cars imported to this country did have front oil coolers as a standard item. I've not owned one that did not, never seen one without either. Also, there was never any smog devices on the 71 cars that I'm aware of (except the vapor canister for the gas tank), at least if my memory serves.
The big problem here is the engine case. This car will not reach it's potential with a replacement case. There's no way to verify what's inside, at least with a matching number case you'd be reasonably sure that the internals were correct. Here, you have to trust the seller. Looks like a pretty nice car, however, just not one that should bring top dollar.

beautiful car. I get the feeling it will go for a lot of money even without matching numbers but with ebay, who knows? It's a tough one...not "collectible", but seems too nice to be a daily driver. Then again maybe it is the ultimate driver...it it gets beat up you don't car since it isn't a matching car. Depends on what it goes for.
Speaking of nice cars (or at least deals), seems like the buy it now price of $31.9K was pretty reasonable: |

Those early 993's seem to be all over the board. I've heard of everything from around $28k to $45k for cars that appear very, very similar in condition!! -- Curt

Didn't meet reserve at $19.1k. Was the seller overoptimistic?

puz..
NO. I think buyers were pessimistic. I will go along with Todd on this car, it is a very nice example. As for the case not being matching, it wouldn't stop me from purchasing it. The author did say the 2.2 was available, but I would only wonder WHY 2.0 replacement. The French bulbs are correct, and legal here in California. My issue would be paint, rust, and leakdown and compression...

I would always want to see the car in person, but looking at Curtis' 4 criteria:
- paint is represented as "no flaws" - rust is represented as not present - compression is 150 (a bit low?) but same across cylinders - no leakdown info I would note that when I read this, I assumed the engine is probably not 2l - rather it is still a 2.2 but has an early aluminium case (stronger than magnesium). With appropriate receipts, I would actually consider this as a positive. I have heard that eventually the mag cases start to wear out (even on early rich-running cars). I really liked it and, subject to a PPI, it is worth $19k in New Zealand. But (and big but) I wonder what the reserve is??
