				Mileage inconsistencies

			Hi All,

What are your thoughts on cars with mileage inconsistencies? I'm shopping around for a 911 and came across one which currently shows ~50K miles on the odometer but carfax shows about three times that. The current owner knows about the inconsistency (listed in the ad) but the price sure doesn't reflect this fact! I'm not really considering this particular car but I was curious what you all thought of such a situation. I would think the car is a giant question mark and should be priced accordingly. |

You can have high mileage gems and low mileage turds...

A thorough inspection/PPI will tell you more about the car than the recorded mileage. Speedos fail and get swapped out all the time in these cars. YMMV...

What is the pattern on Carfax? Records?

I have a low mileage testarossa, and the carfax is all over the place. I suspect that most smog places and dmv's could care less what they enter. The car has 13,000 documented miles. The smog place asked me the milage, and then entered 113,000. Good luch changing it. DMV entered TMU, because the car is over 20 years old... Good luck changing that. It shouldnt be that hard to tell the difference between a car with 50k and 150k miles... Bo |

I agree. It shouldn't be too hard to tell. I didn't actually see the report so I can't comment on the pattern. I was more curious about what others thought of the idea of a car reflecting such inconsistencies. It does brand it with a bit of a mongrel status. Not that it matters if condition is good.

What do the records and condition reflect? Odometers in these cars aren't the best so I wouldn't put a ton of faith in that 50k reading.

What is the best way to tell the difference between 50k and 150k in mileage? Pedal wear? Carpet wear? Seat wear? Bushing wear? Most of the mechanical stuff can be replaced, which doesn't help much. Any fool proof way to tell? |

I'd start with pulling the speedometer and looking at the date codes on the back. If they aren't in line with the build date of the car, you have your answer.

Absent records that indicate that the Carfax record is wrong, I wouldn't touch a car with that many miles, if the speedometer showed a third of the actual miles. JR |
