Originally a soft window targa?

Pic from 71E engine compartment sticker says something about plast. rear window. Does that mean it was originally a SWT?

Anything is possible, but the sticker does not specifically indicate that. Just as it has information about different tire sizes, etc., the sticker would work for all models. I wonder if the seating positions with targa soft window was different than 2/2? Interesting.

My understanding is that it was not completely uncommon to replace the soft window with a glass window back in the day. I know it sounds crazy now, but back then???

What does the inside of the targa bar look like? Does it have the holes cut out in the upholstery for the latches?

Anyway, there is a chance it was a softie, but to be sure, you may want to order a COA: Certificate of Authenticity - Owner Services - Porsche Service - Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG

Oh, and by the way...poor car; it has definitely seen better days. Are you going to make her a happy car again and restore?

I thought SWT was discontinued by '71? Am I mistaken?

Brian,

there are clues to look for.

1. location of three tabs (or evidence of removal) at the rear window seam where the rear deck meets. They are located A) in the center and B) flanking each corner section. the are welded with one spot weld to the rear deck and one to the vertical support for the seal "seam".

2. Look for open holes drilled in the rear edge of the targa bar where it meets the body. There is an oval hole here that secures the SWT hoops. I am not sure if all targa bars have these holes.

3. AFIK, all early targa roll bar sections had the cutouts for SWT handles. HOwever, only the actual SWT cars had the holes with backing nuts or nut serts in the outer bolt holes.

4. Does the interior pad have cutouts? for the handles?

5. Look under the paint/fender wells for evidence of the screw holes for the SWT boot mounting tabs (Tenax fasteners). They will look like sheet metal screw holes.

Honestly, from my previous research there were very few SWTs delivered in the 70-71 model year. (number targets are less than 10 but this is hard to confirm). Chances are that it is not an original SWT.

Still, would be really cool if it was.

The SWT was discontinued in 68 as a mid-year change. In fact, the factory manual has conversion pages from SWT to glass window exactly for this change over.

The SWT was a factory option through 73. There were only a handful of cars delivered after the 69 MY.

That was my understanding as well, which would make this car a rare ordered to spec vehicle if it was originally SWT.
